THORNTON — Fairview junior diver Duncan Lester did not want to waste any time this season.

Apparently, neither did many of the state's best divers. At Saturday's Coaches Invitational at the Veterans Memorial Aquatic Center, some rather impressive scores were posted on the board throughout the competition — an early peek in on potential champions in May.

Lester is right among them, months after placing seventh at the Class 5A state meet as a sophomore. Saturday, he performed a personal best to finish second, scoring 538.50 points in what was a heated finals.

"I just wanted to throw dives I knew I could do well in, and then build up my list to get some harder ones in for state, so considering how early in the season it is, I really thought this was a successful meet," Lester said — his three finals dives going for 151.80 points. "My main goal was to dive consistent, and that's what I did."

Smoky Hill's Devin Bellamy, who finished second at state last year, won Saturday's event with an impressive score of 585.40. Overall, four divers scored more than 500 points and a fifth scored 498.45.

For Lester, there's still plenty of time to improve the dive sheet.

"I'm doing some hard twisters, but I know fronts are my best directional dives right now and I know I can do front two-and-a-half pikes right now," he said. "I'm hoping to do front three-and-a-half later this season.

"I don't think we were missing any (top divers) today, so it was good to do as well as I did."

With spring break starting and sectionals looming, The Knights were few in numbers for the invite, and in fact FHS did not field any relay teams.

Sophomore John Paul Phillips highlighted the swimming portion of the meet for the Knights, going 57.18 seconds in the 100 backstroke finals.

Broomfield got two relays back for the afternoon, finishing 18th in the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:47.28 (they hit 1:45.94 in prelims). The Eagles also saw a dramatic drop in time for Jacob Hahn in the 100 backstroke, as the junior went 56.12 in prelims and 56.72 in finals.

Monarch also participated Saturday but did not get anyone back to the finals heats.
