BROOMFIELD — After a scoreless first inning on Thursday, it appeared as though the regular-season rematch of last year's Class 5A state title game between the defending champion Rocky Mountain baseball team and 2017 runner-up Broomfield could be low-scoring.

That would have made sense considering the teams averaged a combined 8.7 runs a game before they met at Broomfield High for the first time since the Lobos defeated the Eagles, 9-5, to claim the program's sixth state championship last May. But both teams' bats and a strong outwardly-blowing wind had plenty to say about that.

The Lobos and Eagles combined for 30 runs on 31 hits, including 11 extra-base hits and four home runs, in a wild game that ended with a 17-13 victory for Rocky Mountain.

"It's always fun to play Rocky," Broomfield head coach Garren Estes said. "It's always a reminder that if you make little mistakes, good teams will make you pay for it. You can look at their record but it's still Rocky. The wind made things interesting today, but we had the wind working for us too. They just made more plays than we did."

The bottom of the fourth was the only clean frame after the Eagles (5-4, 2-2 Front Range) and Lobos (3-7, 2-2 Front Range) didn't score in the first. Scoring their first five runs on a pair of wind-aided home runs to right field by junior Ben Knauer, the Lobos led 5-4 after the top of the third.

Once the Eagles tied the game with a run in the bottom of the third, the Lobos exploded for five runs in the top of the fourth. The Eagles responded each time the Lobos scored after that, but not with enough runs to close the five-run gap in the final three innings.

"Today was a tough one for our pitchers," Estes said. "But we stayed in it. We felt like we would keep scoring runs and we'd have a shot to win if we could just hold them to a couple zeros. But they hit the ball well today so credit to them."

While the teams combined for 31 hits, the Eagles and Lobos also combined for seven errors on a day when every fly ball was an adventure.

The Eagles play again on Saturday on the road at Horizon.
