The Prospect Ridge baseball team snapped a four-game losing streak with an emphatic 13-1 victory over KIPP Denver Collegiate at Northwest Open Space Park on Thursday. Eight different Miners scored at least one run, and Jake Thiret and Dominick Bradley were solid on the mound.
"We've really been struggling, and today we played good baseball. You can't control who the opponent is, you just have to go out and try to play good baseball, and I was happy with the way we approached that today," said Prospect Ridge head coach Mark Knudson.
"Overall we played a lot better than we have been. It feels good to go into spring break with a win," added Thiret.
The Miners opened the scoring with two runs in the bottom of the first inning. Micah Honea led off the inning with a walk, stole second, and then came around to score on an error by the KIPP shortstop. Braeden Walsh, who reached on the error, then stole second and then scored on an RBI double down the left field line by Austin Schaffer.
Prospect Ridge then added eight more runs in the second inning to put the game away for good, highlighted by a two-run double from Brandon Huffman, an RBI double from Thiret, and a bases-clearing, three-run triple from Spencer Herivel.
The Miners scored three more times in the bottom of the third to provide the final margin of victory. Huffman had a two-run single to left field, and later scored on a passed ball.
"Our batting averages aren't terrible, but getting two or three hits in a row has been a problem, so it was good to see happen today," said Knudson.
On the mound, Thiret was wild but effective, walking six batters but allowing just one unearned run on two hits while striking out nine in 3 ⅓ innings of work. Bradley came on in relief and finished out the game, allowing no runs and just one hit.
Next up, the Miners will continue 3A Metro League play when they host Lutheran on April 3.
"The Metro League is nasty, and we've got to play much better baseball than we have been to compete in that league," said Knudson.
