The Mead baseball team spoiled Thornton's home opener, clobbering the Trojans 19-0 on Saturday afternoon. The Mavericks pounded out 15 hits and took advantage of four Thornton errors, while junior pitcher Caleb Ayers was solid on the mound.
"We went up there with a plan in mind, and we had unselfish attitudes. The guys really wanted to do what was best for the team," said Mead head coach Randy Click.
Mead scored six runs in the top of the first inning to set the tone. Senior infielder Brady Carstens started the scoring by launching a triple over the rightfielder's head, scoring senior outfielder Greyson Young and senior infielder Brett Boaz. The next batter, senior outfielder John Edwards, hit a home run over the left field fence to make the Mavericks' lead 4-0. They scored the final two runs of the inning on a throwing error by the Thornton catcher and an RBI single from Lucas Hale.
The Mavericks scored three more times in the second inning to put the game out of reach. Junior outfielder Tanner Liese knocked in two runs on a double to right field and an RBI single from Boaz.
Mead scored 10 more runs over the next three innings to earn the run-rule shortened victory.
Young led the team with three hits and four RBIs out of the leadoff spot. Five other Mavericks had multiple hits and six Mavericks scored multiple runs.
Ayers was excellent on the mound for Mead, shutting out the Trojans for four innings while allowing just three hits and striking out six.
"I just pitched and got ground balls and let my teammates help me," Ayers said.
"He's been dominant," added Click. "He's committed himself in the pen and to his mechanics, and he's changed his mindset moving from one pitch to the next."
Carstens struck out the side in a scoreless fifth inning to close out the victory.
With this win coming on the heels of a 33-0 defeat of Battle Mountain, Mead has scored 52 runs in the first two games of the season. They'll look to continue their offensive onslaught at Pueblo Centennial on Monday.
"Last year, we would let off the gas in the first two innings. We have to keep grinding and stay consistent," said Ayers.
