BROOMFIELD — The opening day of the Boulder National Invitational baseball tournament was decidedly unkind to the BoCo 19-under boys on Wednesday.

But with starter Caleb Martinez on the mound Thursday, things got quite a bit better for the local club. Helping BoCo 19U get back on track in pool play after dropping a pair of 10-1 losses to the Grandview Wolves and the Idaho Falls Bandits on Wednesday, Martinez pitched his team to a 4-1 win over Gameday Friars 18U at Holy Family High School on Thursday morning.

Martinez pitched a seven-inning complete game, allowing one earned run on three hits while striking out eight and walking one.

"The tournament didn't start out like we wanted it to but we came out today and we were a lot better," BoCo 19U coach Andy Lewton said. "We had one of our better arms on the mound and that helped a lot. Whenever Caleb is throwing like he was today, we have a pretty good chance to win the game. He was averaging about 10 pitches an inning and using his pitches really well and that's exactly what we needed from him today."

Martinez nearly finished off the shutout, not allowing a run until the Friars manufactured a run in the bottom of the sixth. After allowing the run in the sixth, BoCo 19U picked up a fourth run in the top of the seventh on an RBI fielder's choice from Colton Goldfarb that reestablished a three-run cushion for Martinez, who came out to pitch the bottom of the seventh and struck out the final two batters to clinch the victory.

BoCo 19U's Alex Schernecke opened the scoring in the top of the first inning with a single that scored Noah Sathre. In the third inning, Schernecke brought home another run when he grounded into a fielder's choice to again bring Sathre home. At the heart of his team's scoring all day long, Schernecke scored in the sixth inning on a sacrifice fly from Avery Riddoch.

"Today was just a much better effort all around," Lewton said. "Unfortunately after going 0-2 on Day 1, it doesn't look like we'll be playing for anything big but we've still got more consolation baseball to play and that's what we're focusing on for the rest of the week."

One of the three players to record multi-hit games, Sathre doubled and scored three of BoCo 19U's four runs. Schernecke and Jon Coufal each had multiple hits for BoCo 19U.
