CENTENNIAL — The Silver Creek summer baseball team's bats have been scorching hot through the summer months and, after a brief respite in the first round of the Legion A state tournament, they returned to form on Friday.
Facing fellow Longmont school Skyline's summer team, the Silver Creek Raptors mashed 12 hits and came up with the timely knocks they needed to beat the Falcons 13-2 in five innings.
Without a loss in the double-elimination bracket, the Raptors advance to face Fort Morgan in the third round on Saturday at 4 p.m. A win there would secure a spot in Sunday's championship game.
"Obviously we swung it a lot better today," Raptors coach Ryan Schram said. "Jack (Carlough) didn't have didn't have quite as good of stuff as usual but still threw 70 pitches or so, got our defense involved and kept them busy."
Opening the game with three runs in the first inning and five more in the second, the Raptors quickly took an 8-0 lead before the Falcons scored their only two runs in the third. Silver Creek added two runs in the bottom of the third and three more in the fourth.
Cade Call (1 for 4) and George Ramirez (4 for 4) each tripled for the Raptors and Lukas Bush (2 for 3) had a double to account for his team's third extra-base hit. Call, Bush and Ramirez drove in three runs each and leadoff man Sam Elting (2 for 2) scored four runs.
"We were more aggressive than we were yesterday," Schram said. "We stepped up and scored some of the runs that we were previously leaving on base. That was a big thing. As soon as that started, the kids got more and more confident and more and more hits started happening."
The Raptors, who defeated South Denver Baseball Academy 4-3 in the first round behind a strong outing from pitcher Dylan Ordway, got five innings and six strikeouts out of starter Jack Carlough on Friday. Carlough gave up just four hits.
The Raptors are now 3-0 against the Falcons this summer.
Coming off a 3-1 victory over Littleton on Thursday, the Falcons used four pitchers against the Raptors on Friday. Caleb Zietlow, Juan Chapparro, Avery Riddoch and James Canar accounted for the Falcons' four hits.
Now sitting on one loss, the Falcons will face host Eaglecrest at 9 a.m. on Saturday.
