CENTENNIAL — Throughout the summer, Silver Creek pitcher Dylan Ordway has received more than adequate run support from the Raptors' potent lineup.
Racking up wins has not been difficult for the soon-to-be senior.
At Eaglecrest High School on Thursday, runs were much harder to come by in the first round of the double-elimination Legion A state tournament. So Ordway took matters into his own hands on the mound to guide the Raptors to a 4-3 win over South Denver Baseball Academy.
"This is the state tournament, this is what you play the entire summer for, so I was obviously excited to get out there on the mound," Ordway said. "It's the big stage and I just went out there and tried not to get the jitters too much. We've been scoring a lot of runs this summer but today there was more pressure and less leeway, so I just had to stay sharp and do what I had to do."
Ordway went the distance, allowing one earned run and just four hits in a seven-inning complete game. Ordway and the Raptors fell behind early, however, allowing two first-inning runs that were aided by an outfield error and a passed ball.
Before SDBA could begin to pull away, Cade Call singled to drive home Sam Elting in the bottom of the first. The quick response helped Ordway settle in on the mound.
"We got a run in the bottom of the inning and that really settled me down," Ordway said. "I realized I just needed to slow down, play the game and led my defense play behind me."
With the game tied 3-3 in the bottom of the sixth inning, George Ramirez doubled to score Christopher Smedley and put the Raptors ahead for good. Ramirez, Lukas Bush and Rex Olinger each had two hits in the game.
"It's great to get a win right off the bat and be in the winner's bracket," Raptors head coach Chad Olinger said. "We had a complete game on the mound so that saves arms and what not. We gave them a few runs early on that we probably shouldn't have but we did a good job of staying in it to come back. They did a good job keeping our bats pretty quiet, especially in comparison to how the whole summer has been. You tip your cap to that and we found a way to keep scoring and get the win."
The Raptors will face the Skyline Falcons in the second round of the tournament at 4:30 p.m. on Friday. The Falcons, who ended the regular season with two wins against Rocky Mountain to reach the state tournament, defeated Littleton 3-1 in the first round on Thursday behind a strong pitching performance from Jonah Chrisman and a 2-for-4 day from Nick Hamby.
"We played a good ball game today," Falcons head coach Travis Schlagel said. "Christen threw a great game and it was a good all-around game. We left a few guys on base and it would have been nice to get a few timely hits to push that lead a bit but our defense was solid and it was a good first game."
