LONGMONT — The Silver Creek summer baseball players are still finding their way on the mound but there's no doubting that the Raptors can hit.

At home on Tuesday, the Raptors tallied 13 hits against Greeley West and played some critical small ball in the seventh inning to win 10-9 in walk-off fashion.

"Our sticks have kept us in it for the seven games we've played so far this summer," Raptors coach Chad Olinger said. "It's just learning to play together. We have a bunch of guys who played with us in the spring and a bunch of guys who have come up from our junior varsity team this summer, so it's been a real teaching atmosphere."

During the high school season in the spring, the Raptors went 14-6 but surprisingly didn't make it out of the district round of the playoffs. Like nearly every team in the state, they graduated several of their top players and are figuring out what they'll have coming back this summer.

So far, the summer looks promising for the Raptors (5-2), who have won their last three games, including a 18-3 win over Fort Morgan and a 9-4 win over Eaton. While they have several lop-sided victories, the Raptors have also won close games like they did on Tuesday.

After taking a 3-2 lead on Greeley West in the first inning, the Raptors couldn't pull away. They game was tied at the end of the third, fifth and sixth innings.

Heading into the top of the seventh tied 9-9, Sam Elting singled to lead off the inning. Cole Borrego reached on a fielder's choice, George Ramirez was hit by a pitch and Max Browne walked to load the bases with one out. Spencer Rich hit an infield single that scored Borrego, who beat out a strong throw home from third.

"They were very patient there, very patient," Olinger said. "We're learning a lot on deck and they had a good approach. We're doing things like paying attention to what the pitcher is doing and we've got kids coming back to the dugout and telling us things that can help the next batter. The kids are picking up on the finer points of the game. Doing things like what we did in the seventh inning are what we're working on."

Borrego scored four of the Raptors' 10 runs and Browne drove in four. Five Raptors (Elting, Borrego, Brown, Rich and Jack Carlough) had multiple hits in the game. Wes Gregory picked up the win on the mound after throwing one and two thirds scoreless innings in relief.
