In a spring sports season that has been decimated by weather delays, it should come as no surprise that Mother Nature had one last shot to deliver before the end of the campaign.
With only the baseball state tournaments left on the docket, rainstorms that began on Thursday and went into the next day forced CHSAA to make the decision on Friday morning to delay the 5A and 4A tournaments by one day, and push the 2A tournament to Sunday.
"While the fields held up well in yesterday and last night's rain storms, there is a significant chance of additional storms this afternoon in the area," CHSAA assistant commissioner Bert Borgmann said in a statement Friday morning. "In attempting to maintain a level playing field for pitching, any postponement this afternoon could jeopardize that aspect of the game.
"Weather for the next two days looks extremely favorable to maintain the integrity of the tournament."
Erie (16-8), which is playing in the 4A final four for the first time, will face Valor Christian (20-4) at 10 a.m. Saturday at All-Star Park, with Pueblo West (20-4) and Windsor (20-4) squaring off in the other semifinal at 12:30.
If Erie wins, the Tigers would play at All-Star Park again Sunday at 10 a.m.
By virtue of being undefeated through the first part of the double-elimination tournament, Pueblo West is guaranteed a spot in Sunday's finals. If Windsor defeats the Cyclones on Saturday, the Wizards would play the Erie/Valor Christian winner at 10 a.m. on Sunday for the right to play Pueblo West in the 12:30 championship game.
If the Cyclones win on Saturday, the Erie/Valor winner would have to defeat Pueblo West twice on Sunday to claim the title.
The scenarios are much simpler for Dawson (16-4) in the 2A tournament at Runyon Field Sports Complex in Pueblo on Sunday. If the Mustangs get by Sedgwick County (22-1) in the 10 a.m. semifinal, they would face the Paonia (22-1)/Limon (18-4) winner in the championship game that follows.
