LONGMONT -- No matter what the Longmont baseball team did, or how many times the Trojans pulled ahead, the Silver Creek Raptors just wouldn't go away Monday evening.

In an early-season contest between cross-town Northern League rivals, the Trojans took the lead three separate times and led by as many as five runs throughout the 2 ½ -hour game at Silver Creek. But in the end, Austin Wood accounted for seven runs to keep Silver Creek in the game, and Nick Metcalf hit a walk-off single to give the Raptors a 10-9 win.

"We're all just brothers on the field, and we went out there together to try to make it happen today," said Wood, who will play for Furman University next season. "We have a lot of confidence in one another, and the way we went to battle for one another today was a great thing to see."

With the win over the sixth-ranked Trojans (1-1), the seventh-ranked Raptors (2-0) have now beaten two top-10 opponents to start the season. They defeated the Windsor Wizards (2-1), who entered the season ranked sixth in the CHSAANow.com preseason poll before dropping out, in their season opener.

Trojans sophomore Austin Hassler drove in Cooper Rothe to kick off Monday's scoring in the top of the first inning. Cason Winn and Sam Elting scored to put Silver Creek up 2-1 briefly in the bottom of the inning before Longmont scored three runs on two hits, two walks and a hit batter to go back up, 4-2 in the third.

Longmont pushed its lead to 8-3 when a costly Raptors error prolonged a four-run fifth inning. But Wood's second home run of the game, a three-run shot in the fifth, highlighted a five-run Raptors frame that tied the game. One more Longmont lead and another tie later, Metcalf lined his game-winning single to left-center field in the seventh inning with runners on second and third, one out and the infield playing in.

"It really was some great teamwork in the seventh," Metcalf said. "Cade Call got on base to start the inning, and DK (Dylan Kramer) put down a great bunt. That set up the inning perfectly, and that's what we needed."

Dagin Renck started on the mound for Longmont and struck out nine batters while giving up seven runs. He also drove in three runs at the plate. Silver Creek's Nick Gambirasi allowed just one earned run in 3 relief innings to pick up the win.

"There were just some crucial points in the game that they really took advantage of," Longmont head coach Tom Fobes said. "We're getting guys on base, and in the first four innings, we were getting the runs across somehow. After the fourth inning, they scored their runs and we didn't."
