GREENWOOD VILLAGE -- The Fairview Knights jogged to the locker room at halftime, down but not depressed.
They had seen Overland run all over them, logging over 300 yards of offense and a 26-13 lead. It looked dire, but whatever poetic magic coach Tom McCartney said during intermission should be bottled up.
The Knights stormed out of the locker room, scoring 33 unanswered points in the third quarter on their way to a 53-32 rout of the Trailblazers on Saturday.
"Going into half we were a little bit down," junior Johnny Feauto said. "Mac just said everyone just calm down, it's not over. Bobby Johnson laid into us and said we're better than them. We showed it."
Fairview (2-0) scored on the first drive of the half and never let up. Cameron Frazier scored on an 11-yard pass from Anders Hill and on a nine-yard run to give the Knights a 27-26 lead.
"We told everybody we believed in what we were doing, we just were going to have to grind it out," McCartney said of his halftime talk. "Our execution needed to be solid and the guys really answered."
No more than on defense. Overland quarterback Austin Conway ran roughshod over the Knights in the first half, accumulating 272 yards of total offense, 168 through the air.
On the first snap after the Knights took a 7-6 lead in the first quarter, Conway dropped back to pass and when he didn't find an open receiver tucked the ball and ran through the Fairview defense for an 80-yard touchdown.
It set the tone for the first half.
After Jonathan Swartzwelter's 37-yard field goal made it 12-10, Conway hit AJ Roper with a 48-yard scoring pass on a third-and-7, and after a Fairview fumble, Conway ran around the left side for another score and then connected for a two-point conversion to give Overland a 26-10 lead.
Conway's first-half numbers were worthy of a full game. He had 104 yards rushing and figured into all four touchdowns.
In the second half, things were very different. Feauto intercepted Conway to end Overland's first drive of the second half and the Knights turned it into a touchdown.
After a fumble, Daniel Hoskins scored the first of his two touchdowns to make it 33-26.
"We got a pick and they're like, 'Uh oh,' because all of a sudden we're up and they didn't expect that," Feauto said.
Feauto picked off Conway on Overland's next play, and right away Hill hit Sam Martin from 22 yards out to make it 40-26 and the rout was on. When the third quarter ended, Fairview had complete control.
"If the defense keeps getting you the ball it turns the momentum," McCartney said. "The five-touchdown quarter helped on a day like today."
Hill finished with 346 passing yards and three touchdowns and Martin had 186 receiving yards and three scores -- one rushing.
Most important, the Knights showed they can turn things around in a hurry.
"This is one of the best team wins I've been a part of," said Luke Miller, who had two interceptions. "This one was a big one."
