DENVER — The old saying goes that only one team, the championship team, gets to win the last game of the season. That's not always the case.

On the final day of the Class 4A volleyball state tournament, the Longmont Trojans played their final match of the season and defeated Berthoud, 25-21, 25-22, 25-23 at the Denver Coliseum. Since third-seeded Ponderosa had already locked up the semifinal berth out of Pool III, the Trojans could not have advanced any further, win or lose.

Still, at the end of the team's last match in 2015, the Trojans were victorious.

"It's wonderful to have the opportunity to end your season with a win," Trojans head coach Holli Stetson said. "That doesn't happen in very many sports. It was great to come down here and face another opponent, and kind of redeem ourselves a little bit."

The Trojans (22-5) won the 4A Northern League regular-season title and entered the state tournament as the sixth overall seed. On Friday, they were one of two teams that lost to Ponderosa, which gave Ponderosa (20-7) the outright claim to a semifinals spot.

Against 10th-seeded Berthoud (16-11), Longmont's University of Michigan-bound senior Sydney Wetterstrom led the team with 13 kills and four aces. Madi Gaibler had four blocks, Megan McKinney had 17 digs and freshman Annika Wetterstrom had 14 assists.

Twice during the regular season, Tri-Valley League rival Windsor had thwarted the Mead Mavericks' upset bids so it was fitting that the Mavericks' season ended against the Wizards at the state tournament on Saturday.

The Mavericks (14-15), who won a tiebreaker to make it out of the Region 12 tournament and claim the 11th overall seed at state, fell 25-16, 22-25, 25-15, 25-15 to the seventh-seeded Wizards (19-8). The loss ended the Mavericks' season but it wasn't exactly a disappointment.

"I'm just so incredibly proud of us that we made state," Mavericks senior Makayla Morton said. "Overall, I think that we ended amazingly. It was a good season to be a Maverick and to end the season like this, at the state tournament was awesome. In the first part of the season, no one believed, no one believed at regionals and we did it. I couldn't be more proud."

Morton had 19 kills in her final match for the Mavericks.

Wrapping up another season in which an improbable late run earned them the 12th seed in the state tournament, the Silver Creek Raptors put up a fight but lost 25-23, 19-25, 25-16, 25-19 to No. 8 seed Delta (22-5) on Saturday.

Last qualifying in 2012, Silver Creek (14-15) is 0-7 all time in three state tournament appearances according to records on But as young as they were this year, a year in which the Raptors won two tiebreakers to qualify out of the Region 8 tournament, head coach Jill Olson thinks the Raptors' first state tournament victory should be coming in the near future.

"They played their hearts out and they earned the right to be here," Olson said. "That's what's so exciting for the program is that we have even more young talent coming in. We'll have a senior-heavy team next year that's been to state, that's won a regional and that's learned how to fight. And we did so much team bonding this season that we have a phenomenal future."
