BROOMFIELD -- She is the lone sophomore on a volleyball roster full of upperclassmen. But when you see Blayke Hranicka play, it becomes immediately apparent why she made the team.
The Holy Family sophomore was dominant Thursday night as the host Tigers whipped Peak to Peak 25-20, 25-17, 25-16 in a key Class 3A Metro League match.
"She's just a hungry, hungry player and the true definition of an athlete," Tigers coach Bryan Winther said. "Every time she comes into the gym, she's looking to get better in some facet of the game."
Hranicka had 12 kills -- many of the loud variety -- and added four blocks as the Tigers earned the straight-sets victory and won their fourth straight match. Holy Family's overall record is 6-7 and the product of a rigorous nonleague schedule, but the Tigers are 5-0 in league play.
Peak to Peak (11-3, 3-2) entered with the gaudy overall mark, but it was all Holy Family in this one.
"We actually used that as motivation," Hranicka said. "We said, 'Let's just get ready to take this team down.'"
Also starring for Holy Family was Claudia Pena (10 kills) and Tylynn Nelson, who had six aces. Nelson, whose serve had crazy, knuckleball-like movement at times, delivered three consecutive aces in the second game.
Setter Sarah Weerstra added 29 assists as the Tigers kept pace with unbeaten Lutheran in the top-heavy league. Lutheran drops to 2A for the postseason, so for 3A purposes, Holy Family is on top.
"We're not done yet," Winther said. "Last year in the Metro League, it was (Colorado Academy) and Holy Family fighting for that top spot. Now we've got five or six teams vying for it."
Peak to Peak played evenly with the Tigers most of the match, but the Pumas often dug themselves a hole early in sets. They seemed to be playing catch-up most the night.
"We made so many errors on our own tonight, and that really gets in your head," Pumas coach Pam Bergeland said. "We had some balls we hit out, we had service errors, and on top of that, they have a great team."
Senior Amy Haberthier led the Pumas with 10 kills and setter Jordan Powley contributed 25 assists.
In the end, it was too much Hranicka and too many early leads for Holy Family.
"That's just how we do it," Hranicka said. "We like to get ahead and stay ahead."
