AURORA — As close in proximity as the two schools are, separated by less that 20 miles, the Silver Creek and Holy Family softball teams have surprisingly never played one another.

The first-ever matchup between Silver Creek and Holy Family is going to take place on Saturday. And it will be a big one, seeing as how the two successful programs' first time squaring off will take place in the semifinals of the Class 4A state tournament at Aurora Sports Park.

"We've never played them, never matched up," Silver Creek coach Ryan Beavers said. "It's kind of weird. So it'll be interesting being that it's the first time. It's also just two really good teams and I think a lot of people kind of had their eyes on that one anyway. It should be fun."

On a collision course from the start, both Holy Family and Silver Creek looked every bit the part of two semifinals teams on Friday's opening day of the state tournament.

No. 3 Holy Family (25-2) trounced Cheyenne Mountain, 16-1 in the first round, and then won 5-1 over No. 6-seeded Tri-Valley League rival and perennial powerhouse Erie (19-8) in the quarterfinals. The No. 2 overall seed, Silver Creek (25-2) rolled to a 10-1 win over No. 15 Evergreen in the first round and then shut out No. 7 Pueblo South for a 2-0 victory in the quarterfinals.

"It's been a while since we've played any really, really tough competition and we won a lot of games by big margins so you wonder how you're going to deal with adversity when it comes," Beavers said. "The girls responded well to that."

Of the four teams remaining in the 4A playoffs - Holy Family, Silver Creek, Berthoud and defending champion Mountain View - two are from the Tri-Valley League and two are from the Northern League. At 10 a.m., each semifinal will feature a contest between a team from either conference.

"We talked to the kids a lot throughout the whole season about enjoying the journey," Holy Family coach Mitch Martinez said. "We've been having fun, playing the game the way it's supposed to be played and not worrying about the outcome. We want them to go out there and just play, they've bought in and done a really good job of that. I'm really proud of them.

"And it will be cool because we've never played Silver Creek. We're always around each other but for whatever reason, we've never played them. It should be a really good game."

The Silver Creek Raptors, who have never played in a state title game, reached the 4A semifinals last season, eventually falling 7-6 to Pueblo Central. The Holy Family Tigers appeared in four straight 3A state title games from 2005-2008 and won their lone 3A state championship in 2006.

The Erie Tigers reached the quarterfinals of last season's state tournament and did so yet again, winning against 11th-seeded Longmont (18-8-1) by a score of 14-1 in the first round on Friday.

Holy Family eliminated Erie 5-1 in the quarterfinals.
