BRIGHTON - The final huddle of the season was filled with sadness, but it also contained hope for the Broomfield softball team.

Two one-run losses in the 5A Region 3 tournament on Saturday ended the Eagles' season, but through the tears of disappointment was hope for the future.

"We have a young team and we had to say goodbye to some amazing seniors, but we can keep building those relationships," junior Lauren Klein said.

Broomfield (13-8) said goodbye to four seniors a week earlier then it hoped. A 4-3 loss to Cherry Creek in the first game and an 11-10 loss to Prairie View in the second game left the Eagles short of the state tournament.

The Eagles, seeded 12th in the region, couldn't hold a slim lead on the Bruins in the opener. After Cherry Creek went up 2-0 in the first inning Broomfield responded with three in the bottom of the frame, two coming on a double by junior Jenna Eatmon.

"We had a lot of confidence going into the second inning," Eatmon said.

The Eagles couldn't sustain the offense, managing just three hits the rest of the game. The Bruins eked out single runs in the third and the sixth and held on.

Broomfield still had a chance to reach state against the No. 5 seed Thunderhawks, who were upset by Horizon in the first game. The wind picked up and gusted hard throughout the game as the Eagles built a 5-0 lead.

Prairie View woke up and scored a run in the fourth and six in the fifth to go up, but Broomfield rallied to tie it in the sixth. The Thunderhawks scored four more runs in the sixth and then had to withstand an Eagles rally in the seventh to get the win.

The wind was so strong throughout the game that routine fly balls became challenging and infield pop ups were blown 20 feet out of play.

"Both teams had to do it so it couldn't have been the conditions," Broomfield coach Paula Seifried said. "Favor didn't come out our way this time. We're a young team and it kind of showed a little today but there's no team I'd rather be here with."
