The Erie Tigers won a back-and-forth game with Holy Family 12-10 to take the 4A Region 3 title and advance to the state tournament.

"It feels good to win. Holy Family beat us twice this year. They're a great team that's well coached. It feels good to win a regional championship," said Erie head coach Harold Simmons.

Windy conditions wreaked havoc on both teams' defenses, and as a result both teams would score in bunches.

Holy Family went ahead 5-2 in the top of the second inning, getting RBI singles from Anna Martinez and Erin Winters, but Erie would take the lead for good with a seven-run bottom of the second. Five Erie hits, including a two-run triple from Kat Sackett and a two-run homer from Kara Kovets, and two Holy Family errors paved the way for Erie's big inning.

Holy Family rallied twice late, but Erie was able to snuff both of them out. Holy Family scored twice in the fifth and once in the sixth to cut the deficit to 10-8, but Alyssa Barnett came into the game and was able to limit the damage. Another two-run home run from Kovets in the bottom of the sixth put the game out of reach.

Kovets finished with five RBIs, Sackett had three hits and two RBIs, and Madysun Vaughan had two doubles.

Looking ahead to the state tournament, Simmons says his team is motivated.

"The road goes through Valor (Christian). They're the three-time champions. We'd love to be there again and win it. It's always motivating that our program has a proud history. Injuries or not, we're going to go after it and take our best shot when we get there next weekend," he said.
