LONGMONT -- Two out of three is never bad, especially when a berth in next week's Class 4A state softball tournament is at stake. And for Silver Creek, that was the case.

Host Silver Creek defeated Green Mountain 8-2 in the first round of the Region 3 tournament on a windy and rain soaked Saturday afternoon. However, the Raptors were forced to stage a comeback to gain their berth after losing to tournament winner Berthoud, 12-11 in their second game. The Spartans were able to advance with a 10-4 victory against Elizabeth in their opener.

Silver Creek's loss to Berthoud set the stage for a second game against Green Mountain for the state berth. Once again Silver Creek was able to come through, this time with a nail-biting 2-1 victory against the Rams.

The pivotal game against Green Mountain was tied 1-1 heading into the bottom of the sixth inning and that's where the Raptors were able to pull out the win.

McKenna Kostelecky, the second batter in the inning for Silver Creek, singled then was able to steal second base with teammate Haille Weber in the batter's box. Then to make it all the more interesting, she stole third. But the throw from the Rams catcher, CJ Christensen, was off to the left and Kostelecky zipped home.

The victory enabled Silver Creek to improve to 17-5 overall while Green Mountain ended its season 11-10. Berthoud will enter the state tournament with a 14-7 record.

"We came from behind in all three games today," said Silver Creek coach Ryan Beavers. "We were playing tight in the first game and I think defense set the table for us. The kids didn't get on a roll until the later innings, but they certainly came through today when it counted."

Green Mountain had been able to take the early leads in both games against Silver Creek. The Rams of coach Laura Ivy took advantage of a double by Camille Ostler to open the inning then tallied their lone run as Courtney Benavidez drove her home with a following single.

"Our kids played their hearts out," Ivy said. "We played error free the entire day, but things just didn't work out for us. Silver Creek played us very tough today and we wish them well the rest of the way."

Silver Creek let its game against Berthoud quickly get out of hand. The Spartans scored three runs in the top of the first inning, added four in the second, three in the third and one more in the fourth for an 11-3 lead. The Raptors had countered with two runs in the second and a single one in the third. However, they nearly pulled out the victory four runs in both the fifth and sixth innings. Berthoud, though, would score the game winner in the sixth on a single by Kenzie Villarreal that drove in Kendall Baker.

Had Baker not scored that game winner, the bottom of the sixth might have produced a different outcome. That's because Silver Creek's Keegan Wergin belted a grand slam homer. And that one was her second homer of the game as her first one produced the Raptors third run of the game back in the second inning.

"That second game was certainly intense,," said Ashley Beavers. "We got the hits to come back and everyone was getting up again. We played our hearts out all day and we should have won our first two. That last game was closer than we hoped, but we had what it took to win at the end."
