BROOMFIELD -- The Holy Family softball squad secured a spot in the state tournament with Saturday's 8-1 win over Brush in a Class 3A Region 1 semifinal.

The Tigers jumped out to an early lead against the Beetdiggers and starting pitcher Nicole Gardon went the distance, striking out eight and allowing just one run as HFHS earned its 16th victory of the year.

The championship game of the regional was postponed due to rain and will be played Sunday afternoon against the winner of the Lamar-Fort Lupton semifinal.

BROOMFIELD SURVIVES TWICE TO EARN BID

COLORADO SPRINGS -- The Broomfield Eagles got the two wins they needed at their Class 4A regional in order to qualify for state, defeating Northridge 8-7 and Discovery Canyon 6-5.

BHS was able to survive an ugly first game in which it tallied only three base hits thanks in part to Lauren Lynch's three-run homer, the first dinger of her career. Starting pitcher Shelby Grandt struck out nine in the win.

The Eagles had more success at the plate in their second game of the day. Katie Knudsen led the way, going two for three and scoring two runs. Knudsen also made several excellent defensive plays to allow Broomfield to maintain its slight edge.

Broomfield now stands at 14-7 heading into the state tournament.

PEAK TO PEAK COMES UP SHORT

BASALT -- Despite posting a late rally at the plate the Peak to Peak softball team was never able to fully catch up to Basalt, falling 10-8 in a Class 3A regional.

The Pumas found themselves down 10-5 after a number of costly defensive errors put them in the hole. But their offense came alive in the seventh and final frame, scoring three runs and positioning to runners on base before BHS was finally able to get the third out and end the game.

Senior Nicole Kracha came off the bench to pinch-hit and lead the comeback, reaching base safely and driving in a run in her final game.

Peak to Peak finishes the season with a record of 9-10.
