THORNTON — The Broomfield gymnastics team wasn't quite sure what to expect on Thursday's first day of the Class 5A state championships.

With a season-best team score top of mind, the Eagles at least accomplished their goal.

At the end of the first day, on which the team title and all-around competition are decided, the Eagles finished fifth in the team competition with a score of 177.775. Not only were they satisfied with a top-five finish, they also ended the 2018 season with their highest team score of the fall, besting their 177.50 from regionals.

"Actually, we ended up doing pretty well," Eagles head coach Whitney Parzybok said. "We had a little hiccup on bars but we came back and we had our best score on floor of the season. That's a good start for us and we'll see how things go on Saturday."

Broomfield's Darcy Jew, who placed 15th in the all-around last year, led the Eagles on Thursday. She finished eighth in this year's all-around with a combined score of 36.650. Her best finish of any of the evening's four events was a ninth-place score in the vault.

Also showing well in the all-around, Broomfield's Alli Willmarth placed 19th with score of 34.

Broomfield was fourth in last season's team competition and finished third the year before that. The Eagles were runners-up in 2015, 2014 and 2013, and won the 5A title in 2012.

Medals for individual events will be handed out on Saturday.

Melanie Roberts, who placed fourth in the balance beam last year, is the Eagles' best to take home a top-three individual medal.

"She had a great state meet last year," Parzybok said. "She's got a great routine this year and as long as she hits, she should be back up there with the other girls again this weekend."

Also on Thursday, the Mountain Range team, for which a number of Legacy gymnasts compete, finished 10th out of 10 scoring teams. For the Mustangs, Dani Medina placed 21st in the all-around with a score of 33.275 and Jenna Bossi placed 22nd with a score of 33.15.

The team state champion competition for Class 4A will be held Friday evening and individual events will begin for both classifications at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday at Thornton High School.
