LOVELAND — With so much to the resume, it still felt a bit empty.
Heading into Friday's regular-season finale at Patterson stadium, Loveland's football team had run roughshod over the competition, posting a 9-0 mark and sitting No. 1 in the 4A polls, outscoring teams 368-34. The Indians have beaten ranked teams in 4A and 5A along the way, but a piece was still missing.
They had yet to be able to lay claim to the Longs Peak League title, and Skyline was standing in the way, both with 4-0 marks in league play.
"That was huge for us. We wanted to win our conference," LHS coach Wayne McGinn said after the 42-14 victory. "We came out ready to play."
To do it, Loveland (5-0 LPL, 10-0 overall) did Loveland. Run the ball. Run it again. Run it a little bit more. A dash of Riley Kinney, a touch of Cody Rakowsky and a healthy does of Zach Weinmaster.
The Indians rushed for 466 yards in the game and had 298 of that total by halftime as they scored on four of five possessions. In the first half, Weinmaster doubled up on scoring runs (45, 3), while Kinney (33) and Rakowsky (31) had impressive scoring bursts of their own.
Weinmaster, who had 152 yards on the ground at the break, finished with 184 on 18 rushes to lead a trio of Indians backs to surpass the century mark. Kinney finished with 119 on 12 totes, Rakowsky had 12 carries for 118.
As impressive as they all are, McGinn knows the line up front deserves a lot of credit. The rushing total was impressive, but it's the grind that ignites center Brendan Bower.
"We do take pride in that, we all do," he said of the LHS front.
