WESTMINSTER — The potential success that many had hoped would follow a three-win campaign in 2017 hasn't yet materialized for the Prospect Ridge football team this fall.
As they try to build a program, the Miners' prospects for matching or surpassing last year's win total took another hit on Saturday afternoon.
Hosting the Berthoud Spartans for a 2A Patriot West conference game at North Stadium, the Miners fell 57-0. The loss to the Spartans (4-2, 1-1) was the fourth straight for the Miners (1-5, 0-2) and dropped them even further below the .500 mark in their third season with a varsity team.
But the Miners know that starting a football program would be hard, and that the hardest part is far from over, and they're sticking with it.
"We're trying to build something here and I think it's been going great," first-year Miners head coach Mike Storer said. "The kids are just fantastic and they're buying in. That's what we need and there's some energy. Even though we're not winning a lot of game, there's some energy around the school and around the football program. We have a long-term goal, the attitude in fantastic and they're not giving up."
A Class 3A playoff team a year ago, the Spartans scored 37 points in the first quarter. With 6 minutes, 37 seconds remaining in the second quarter, Spartans defensive back Daniel Pelphrey intercepted a pass by Miners quarterback Jake Thiret and returned it 20 yards for a touchdown that started the running-clock mercy rule.
The Spartans defense intercepted three passes and held the Miners to 25 yards of total offense in the game. Offensively, they racked up 369 yards.
"They're very disciplined and you can tell that their coaching staff did a good job putting that team together," Storer said. "It's my first year and my staff's first year, and we've got a new offense. We've got a lot young kids and a lot of seniors this year that it's their first time playing football in a couple years. We're grappling with that but the kids are invested and they're working their butts off."
The Miners started the season with just 24 players on their roster and were forced to forfeit their first game of the season. The Miners' lone win of the season came back on Sept. 21, a 24-7 victory over Jefferson.
Prospect Ridge will play University next Thursday in Greeley.
