LONGMONT -- An appropriately brisk fall night for high school football? Check.
A home game? Check.
Facing a rival? Check.
A fourth-straight victory for a super September? Check.
It was all there Friday night for the Longmont football team at Everly Montgomery Field.
The Trojans, ranked eighth in the state in Class 4A, completed a 4-0 month by routing Silver Creek 43-8 in non-league action.
The victory gave LHS (4-1) a sweep of its intra-city rivals in back-to-back weeks after the Trojans defeated Skyline 42-34 last weekend. Against Silver Creek, Longmont has now won four of the last five in the series.
"It's great for us, but it's what we expected from the beginning of the season," said Longmont junior Sage Yazzie, who caught four passes for 102 yards and two long touchdowns on Friday. "It gives us a lot of motivation for the rest of the season."
Dating back to last year, Longmont has now won 12 of its last 14 games, with the only two losses coming to Erie in last year's 3A state semifinals and at Pueblo East in this year's season opener.
"We set ourselves up for a tough conference schedule, but you can't win 'em until you get to 'em," Trojans coach Doug Johnson said. "These were big games for us and tonight was big for us."
After sputtering a bit offensively in the first quarter and going scoreless, Longmont racked up 29 points in the second period -- and added another TD 37 seconds into the third quarter. Before halftime, senior quarterback Oakley Dehning threw for 145 yards and two touchdowns (51 and 30 yards), both of which were caught by Yazzie, who finished the half with three catches for 90 yards.
On the other side of the ball, Longmont kept Silver Creek to 99 yards of total offense before intermission, sacking QB Carter Closson three times, with Cruz Garcia intercepting a pass that set up the Trojans' second TD. It was Garcia's third pick of the season. LHS added a fourth sack in the second half.
When senior Drake Engelking scored rushing touchdowns of 53 and 12 yards in the first half of the third period, it was 43-0 and a mercy-rule running clock was utilized the rest of the way.
Engleking finished the night with 137 yards and three TDs.
Dehning was equally as impressive under center, racking up 207 yards and two touchdowns passing with one interception, and two rushes for 31 yards.
"We're in a very good groove now," Yazzie said. "We've just got to keep our minds right and it'll be great."
About the only downside for Longmont was when senior Jaydon Elkins likely broke his collarbone in scoring on a 15-yard run just before halftime. "I think he just fell weird," Johnson said. Elkins is also a standout for the LHS boys basketball team.
Silver Creek only avoided a shutout when Longmont intentionally took a safety when it was backed up to its own 1 and in punting position with about nine minutes left in the game. Shortly thereafter, the Raptors added a TD on a 4-yard run by Matthew Murphy.
Silver Creek, which dropped to 1-4 after its third consecutive loss, is now averaging just 11.4 points per game.
"We've got work to do," said first-year coach Brian McGee. "From a physical standpoint, in the first quarter we showed we could play with these guys (from Longmont). It's not that we can't play with them.
"But right now, because of the inexperience we have at some key positions, you have to learn to accept adversity and be able to get over it. We're at a point with some of our young kids and a few of our seniors that when things start to go downhill, it can escalate a little bit. We've got to figure out a way to get over that."
Next up, Longmont plays its first true road game since August as the Trojans travel to Greeley West for a contest on Oct. 5 at 7 p.m. And Silver Creek hosts Skyline at Everly-Montgomery at the same time.
