LAKEWOOD — The Wheat Ridge Farmers established themselves as one of the top programs in the state by playing a hard-nosed brand of football.

It's a formula that works well for the Farmers, as they've racked up seven state championships and are annually one of the toughest opponents on any team's schedule.

And while Wheat Ridge has struggled recently, only managing a 7-13 mark over the 2016-17 seasons, it still maintains that old school approach to the game.

The Farmers are still trying to regain past glories, getting off to a 1-2 record this season, including a 40-0 loss to Arvada West last week, but they still are capable of playing a punishing style of football.

Centaurus found that out first-hand Friday afternoon at Jeffco Stadium, as Wheat Ridge scored on all seven of it's first-half possessions en route to a running clock and a 55-21 victory over a Warriors team that had won it's last two games heading into the game with the Farmers.

Wheat Ridge (2-2) wasted little time taking control, returning the opening kick to its own 44-yard line before getting a 56-yard touchdown run from Jack Michel within the first minute of play.

A Centaurus fumble on the ensuing possession led to a 2-yard touchdown run from Nick Von feldt.

That was a re-occurring theme of the first half, as the Warriors (2-2) turned the ball over four times, including three interceptions.

Rocco Tate added a 22-yard rushing touchdown and Von Feldt powered in from 1-yard out to open up a 28-0 lead.

That led to the lone highlights for Centaurus in the first half, as Andres Mendoza returned the ensuing kick down to the Wheat Ridge 22 yard line, setting up a 21-yard touchdown toss from Nick Faraca to Davian Lujan two plays later to cut the deficit to 28-7 heading into the second quarter.

But that failed to stem the tide as the Farmers only needed five plays to answer, getting another Von Feldt touchdown run, this time from 37 yards out.

Von Feldt would add one more rushing touchdown, this one coming after a 2-yard Max Christensen TD, pushing the score to 48-7 and starting the running clock with 3:30 left in the half.

Faraca would score on a 1-yard run and then hit Anthony Montoya with a 5-yard scoring toss in the second half for Centaurus.

The Warriors return to action next Friday when they host Heritage.
