BROOMFIELD — A heave from Steven Croell to Caden Peters gave Broomfield back the momentum late into the first half on Friday night. A long pass from Croell to Mitchell Morales and the Eagles' offense had caught fire.

A memorable opening and close to the opening half — helped by the streak — thwarted another more inauspicious streak for the Eagles.

Broomfield scored 12 points in the first 6:06 of the game and added 17 in the final 3:13 of the half, beating cross-town rival Legacy 55-14 while effectively ending the Lightning's run of five straight wins in the series.

"These seniors that have played for me for three years, a lot of them were starters as sophomores, I'm just happy for these seniors that they'll walk away with the Mayor's Cup," Broomfield coach Blair Hubbard said.

Croell threw for 125 yards and had two touchdowns and Dylan Torres bounced back from two fumbles to net 154 yards and four touchdowns to lead Broomfield (1-0) to victory at Elizabeth Kennedy Stadium.

To the delight of Broomfield's stuffed-in student section, Brenden McKinney and Ryan Capasso continued the party from their fans' early tailgate with a pair of blustering third-down sacks. It forced Legacy (0-1) into three-and-outs and set the Eagles up for an impending offensive explosion.

Following a shanked punt that put Broomfield's first drive on Legacy's 21, Torres had two strong rushes down to the 1-yard line and Croell capped it off with a quarterback sneak. The dynamic duo was in tune again in their following sequence, leading the Eagles on a nine-play, 59-yard drive that Torres finished off with an 11-yard run straight up the middle to make it 12-0 — stunted by a pair of two-point conversion fails -- with 5:54 left in the opening quarter.

Legacy took command from there and jumped in front 14-12 on the back of quarterback Nicholas McCarthy and running back Dakota Key — but the Eagles had another run in them before half. Croell's 52-yard completion set up an 11-yard touchdown by Torres with 3:13 left in the half and Croell found Morales streaking open to the endzone for a 38-yard touchdown at the 1:18 mark.

Legacy then lost a fumble with 4 seconds left in the half and Matthew Eich drilled a 31-yard field goal to put the Eagles up 29-14.

"Our mentality is never too high and never too low," Croell said. "When we're up high we don't want to get too high where it gets away from us. And when we got down low we bounced it right back just above that line."

McCarthy threw for 129 yards and Key totaled 169 yards of offense for Legacy. The Lightning's string of series wins date back to 2012 and is now over. First-year coach Corey Heinz put the blame on himself afterward.

"They made the plays," he said. "Give them credit."

The Lightning needed only 22 seconds to cut into the lead. Nicholas McCarthy dropped a screen pass off to Dakota Key, who raced 61 yards down the sideline to the 4 and McCarthy capped it with a keeper to make it 12-7. In the second, the Lightning jumped in front after a 10-play, 85-yard drive. McCarthy extended the drive deep into the Eagles' territory with a 12-yard completion to Jacob Duran and Key finished it with a 7-yard run to make it 14-12 with 7:28 left in the half.

The Eagles responded with the next 17 points of the half and the final 43 points in the game.

"It's a great feeling right now," Croell said.
