It's been all Fairview the past nine seasons, but after Boulder scored one of its more impressive wins of the past six years or so last week against then 4A No. 9 Denver South, the Panthers feel they have a good shot to end the drought.

For Fairview, last week's win at Horizon was business-like, especially for the passing game and new varsity starting quarterback Aidan Atkinson. The Knights somehow managed to drop out of the CHSAANow rankings despite a lopsided win, so they continue hoping to make believers out of people with a decisive win over the Panthers.

Here's a quick look at both teams entering Friday's 5 p.m. affair at Recht Field:

FAIRVIEW KNIGHTS (1-0)

Coach: Tom McCartney (25th season; 161-103 overall record and 16-8 vs. Boulder)

WHEN FAIRVIEW HAS THE BALL: Fairview is starting a non-senior quarterback for the first time since 2012, but in his debut Atkinson looked the part of a seasoned veteran and connected well with a brand new receiving corps that includes Bryce Desjardins, Matt Greenwald and Tevye Shuettpelz-Rohl — the latter who also showed he is a force on special teams. The Knights were exceptional along the line against Horizon and Atkinson barely got touched all night, and Boulder will have to get some pressure in order to disrupt some timing.

Beyond that, the rushing attack will center on Mariano Kemp, who at 5-10 and 230 pounds is tough to wrap up. He had a career most 26 carries last week and churned out 143 yards and two scores.

BOULDER PANTHERS (1-0)

Coach: Vincent Smith (2nd season; 2-9 overall and 0-1 vs. Fairview)

WHEN BOULDER HAS THE BALL: The Panthers will downplay the Denver South win as just a step in the direction they are trying to take, but a victory over a ranked team (even if it was based on a 0-0 record) is huge for the program overall. Now, their offense needs to show some consistency against another formidable opponent.

With senior Patrick Fletcher leading the way and an offensive line that is getting coached up by a former lineman in Smith, the Panthers run attack looked impressive last week averaging six yards a pop. Ryan Travis, Saul Escobar, Daniel Feenstra and Wilson Maier all had positive gains in addition to Fletcher's 193 yards on 29 carries. That said, one big play completion through the air was about all BHS had in the pass attack. Even if it's slants and seams, the Panthers will need to mix things up a bit, especially if Fairview finds a couple of quick strikes as it is known to do just about every game.

NOTALBE: The game is being broadcast on AM 760, and the game is also serving as a time of recognition for youth football around the Boulder area. Youth football players between ages 7-13 who come in their game jerseys will get free admission.
