PUEBLO - Longmont High School stumbled in its first Class 3A test Saturday.

The fourth-ranked Trojans (0-1) fell 27-3 to No. 1 Pueblo East (1-0) at Dutch Clark Stadium in a highly-anticipated showdown.

Longmont head coach Doug Johnson shouldered the blame for the loss, in which the Trojans failed to score a touchdown despite marching inside the East 5-yard line on two occasions.

"I did a terrible job," Johnson said. "I'm really proud of our boys. I've got the best team in the state, and I laid an egg.

"Pueblo East really executed, they really did some great things. We had some chances, but I'm really disappointed in me."

Longmont punted on its first three possessions and fumbled on its fourth, which allowed the two-time defending 3A state champions to take a 13-0 halftime lead.

The Trojans regained life on their first drive of the second half with a 55-yard catch and run by Kelvin Townsend from Oakley Dehning.

But two consecutive sideline interference penalties on the Trojans and an offensive hold backed them up from the 3-yard line to the 28, and ultimately led to a 42-yard field goal from Avery Peterson.

"It was play calling, execution, a few penalties and a few mistakes," Johnson said. "We executed poorly at times, and that's stuff that's taught."

Anthony Rodriguez snagged one of two Longmont interceptions on East's next drive, but the Trojans were never able to capitalize on the turnovers. Peterson missed a 23-yard field goal in the third and had another blocked in the fourth.

The Eagles put the punctuation mark on the win with a pair of passing touchdowns from sophomore Luc Andrada in the fourth.

"Our defense made some plays at times, we just have to become more consistent," Johnson said. "We have more talent than what we showed."

Dehning finished with 66 yards rushing and 98 yards passing, though he threw two interceptions late.

Townsend caught three passes for 74 yards, and Cruz Garcia ran six times for 63 yards.
