LONGMONT — You have to forgive Longmont coach Doug Johnson if he was a little paranoid about Friday's Class 4A first round matchup against Pueblo South.
The longtime Trojans coach had twice seen the Colts in the first round of the playoffs, and both times were the victims of the Steel City's finest.
"I probably left the 1's in there a little too long just because of that past history," said Johnson, after his team advanced to the quarterfinals with a 58-21 trouncing of the Colts at Everly Montgomery Field.
Second-seeded Longmont (11-0) will await their next round fate until Saturday. They will either host Ponderosa or travel to Denver South depending on who wins that game.
On a night when the Trojans welcomed quarterback David Speidel back to the starting role, after a broken collarbone in the Windsor game sidelined him in mid-October, the Longmont offense was able to run seamlessly against a Pueblo South defense that was on its heels in the opening moments of the game.
The Colts (6-5) fumbled the ball on the first play of the game, and just three plays later after starting at the 15-yard line, Conlan Berger — who returned last week against Thompson Valley, went in from two yards out for the first of his six touchdowns on the night.
"I thought we played well on both sides of the ball and the defense played really great," Berger said. "One of those touchdowns was on me because I mishandled the snap, but everyone played amazing, it was a great team win."
The Trojans didn't stop there. The defense held Pueblo South to back-to-back 3-and-outs and each time Berger made them pay. Scoring runs of 19 and 30 yards in the first quarter extended the lead to 21-0.
"We did a good job executing tonight and I was happy to see David back in there and healthy," Johnson said. "It was nice to have my guy back."
The Trojans opened up the playbook a little more and were able to make the Colts looks silly at times, especially on Ethan Gabrielle's 52-yard touchdown run in the second quarter that had a majority of the Pueblo South defenders chasing the wrong ball carrier.
Pueblo South cut the lead to 28-14 late in the second quarter on Steven Brock's 1-yard touchdown run, but that would be as close as they would get.
Longmont would score the next 30 points and would trigger the running clock early in fourth quarter, when Berger scored his sixth touchdown of the game on an 85-yard kickoff return after a safety.
"Maybe I scored six in a little league game, but it is hard to remember those games though," said Berger, who was one of three Trojans to go over 100 yards rushing — including Speidel (104) and Gabrielle (112) — with 130 yards on 17 carries.
"Everybody played great, especially our line."
