The slow-falling flurries in the night skies around Recht Field ended up as quite the precursor to Fairview's evening on the gridiron Friday.

Opening the Class 5A postseason against a gritty Chaparral team out of the Continental League, the host Knights had a disappointing start that never got better in a 37-8 loss to the Wolverines.

Special teams woes put them in an early hole, and CHS' running back Dae'von Davis kept putting shovel to dirt with bursts of 10 yards or more right through the Knights defense.

Davis, a junior who entered the game with just 634 yards rushing in nine previous contests, torched the Fairview defense for 237 yards and three touchdowns, and Chaparral — a No. 5 seed in Region C — gets a date with No. 1 seed Valor Christian in round two.

Fairview, seeded fourth, ended the season 7-3.

"They were very physical, they were very big and they executed well," said junior lineman Duncan Heath of the Wolverines' stellar line. "We could have played better on our side of the ball, but really their execution beat us."

The Knights have rarely had a poorer start from an offensive standpoint. On its second possession, Fairview missed a 26-yard field goal attempt and on seven first half possessions totaled just 103 yards. They also had 66 penalty yards.

Chaparral was able to get pressure on Thomas Creese with three, four and five guys, and the senior quarterback's timing was off as a result. He was sacked four times, and with no running game developing, Creese finished 16 of 40 for 209 yards.

"We were expecting to be able to handle them on the offensive line," Heath said. "Obviously they could get pressure on our quarterback and we couldn't on theirs, which is not a situation for us to be in."

That same effectiveness along the line for Chaparral's offense helped Davis with his special night. In the first half alone, he had eight carries of 10 yards or more and both of his touchdowns came from 11 yards out.

His 35-yard TD run to start the second-half scoring effectively ended Fairview's bid to move on.
