LYONS — The Boulder County prep cross country community was out in force on Thursday at Lyons Senior/Middle, where five of the state's 19 regionals were held.

In an area that has long been known for its distance running prowess, the competition wasn't just large in volume. It was also incredible in quality.

In total, Lyons hosted the 2A Region 1, 3A Region 3, 4A Region 3, 4A Region 4 and 5A Region 3 meets all at one site. The top-tier performances were myriad and in addition to qualifying nearly 200 runners for their respective classifications' state meets, there were plenty of previews of how things may go down at the state championships next weekend.

"We all connect with each other and run meets together all year, and we have such a beautiful setting here at Lyons that we want to share it," Lyons head coach Mark Roberts said. "We've been running multiple regionals up here for years but this is the most we've ever done. A lot of coaches and athletic directors pitched in to make this happen and there were some really great races. I just love being a part of the cross country community and especially this Boulder County group."

The top four teams and the top 15 individuals from each regional meet statewide qualify for the state meet at Norris-Penrose Events Center on Oct. 27 in Colorado Springs.
