GIRLS TO KNOW

Claudia Burgess, Sr., Boulder: In her three prep campaigns thus far, she has placed third, fifth and 12th in Class 5A and likely has another special season in store for her final try.

Sarah Davidson, Sr., Nederland: Followed shortly thereafter by sophomore teammate Helen Cross, she took 10th at last year's state meet and will be looking to finish on the podium as a senior.

Riley Geldean, So., Centaurus: She may be just a sophomore this season but she's coming into the 2017 campaign having placed eighth in 4A her freshman year.

Ivy Gonzales, Sr., Broomfield: Helping to lead the Eagles to their second straight 5A state championship by placing third individually, she'll be one of the clear favorites to win the 2017 title along with senior teammate Madison Mooney.

Sophia Maeda, Sr., Mead: Placing ninth in 4A right behind Geldean last year, she'll be looking to make yet another leap forward in her final prep season running cross country

Quinn McConnell, Jr., Peak to Peak: Finishing runner-up in 3A after collapsing just before the finish line in 2016, she'll be gunning for her second state title after competing nationally with teammates Anna Shults and Tiana Bradfield.

Emma Schaefer, Jr., Shining Mountain: Only a sophomore last season, she placed ninth in 2A at the state meet and will be back to see if she can do better after an outstanding showing at the track and field championships in the spring.

Brynn Siles, So., Legacy: Bursting onto the state-level scene, she placed seventh in 5A as a freshman in 2016 and has the potential to do even better this fall.

Kenny Lang, Sr., Niwot: Coming in 30th in 4A last season, he was the Cougars' top finisher and will be the top returning runner on a team that also features some talented incoming transfers.

James Lee, Sr., Silver Creek: Last year's 13th-place finish at Class 4A state was a major breakthrough for Lee, who will be looking to top that placement as a senior in 2017 while leading a talented Raptors group that includes Brock Dykema and Logan Simington

Ryan Lehmuth, Sr., Jefferson Academy: While battling since-graduated teammate Christian Van Cleave on the state meet course, he finished seventh in 3A.

John O'Malley, Sr., Centaurus: He placed 12th in Class 4A last season and is coming back for his senior season with his eyes set on an even stronger finish and a podium spot.

Charlie Perry, Sr., Monarch: After placing third in Class 5A as a junior last season, it's Perry's turn to lead the way for teammates like Will Dixon and Isaac Russo as the Coyotes attempt to defend their team title in 2017.

Isaac Roberts, So., Lyons: Just a freshman last season, he continued the Roberts family's tradition of distance running excellence at Lyons by placing sixth in 2A at state and figures to have only gotten faster in the time since then.

Other boys to watch: David Fraser (Sr.); Max Olson (Sr.); Ben Santos (Sr.).

Other girls to watch: Bettina Burgess (Fr.); Alana McClements (Sr.); Miria Moore (Fr.).

Outlook: Led by senior leaders Claudia Burgess and Lauren Neugeboren, the Panthers girls team returns six of its top seven runners and hopes to improve upon its 10th-place finish at the 2016 state meet. Boulder's boys team, on the other hand, graduated a number of its top runners from last season and will have to work hard to push its streak of top-five finishes to four.

BROOMFIELD EAGLES

Coach: Greg Weich (eighth year).

Last year: Boys - Finished 17th at Class 5A state meet. Girls - Won Class 5A state meet.

Boys returning state qualifiers: Joseph Carwin (Sr., 68th); Kip Mielke (Sr., 126th); Hayden Vandepol (Sr., 113th).

Girls returning state qualifiers: Ivy Gonzales (Sr., 3rd), Vanessa Kort (Sr., 26th); Emily Mitchem (Sr., 24th); Katelyn Mitchem (Sr., 19th); Madison Mooney (Sr., 4th), Laura Thompson (Sr., 16th).

Other boys to watch: Spencer Conover (Jr.); Michael Mooney (Jr.); John Zack (Jr.).

Other girls to watch: Lauren Felknor (So.); Alison Leister (Fr.); Sydney Swanker (So.).

Outlook: Already two-time defending state champions, the Eagles girls are returning all their scorers from last year's state championship team and figure to be even deeper than with the additions of Swanker and Leister. The Broomfield boys team should be better, too, with Mooney leading the way up front after placing fifth in the 1,600 at the state track meet in the spring.

CENTAURUS WARRIORS

Coach: Devin Rourke (seventh year).

Last year: Boys - Finished 8th at Class 4A state meet. Girls - Finished 5th at Class 4A state meet.

Boys returning state qualifiers: Henry Bowman (Jr., 116th); Cooper Brown (Jr., 25th); Alex Hooten (Sr., 66th); John O'Malley (Sr., 12th); Kyle Piper (Jr., 79th).

Other boys to watch: Noah Llerandi (Sr.); Torey Puckett (Jr.); Charley Sagrillo (Jr.).

Other girls to watch: Allison Macdonald (Jr.); Molly Maksin (Jr.); Emma Wager (Sr.).

Outlook: Coming off the 2016 campaign, which ended with the Warriors' best combined state meet finish since 2012, both the boys and girls are itching to chase an elusive top-of-the-podium finish this fall. Head coach Devin Rourke thinks this could be his teams' year, as both squads return a strong group with state meet experience and draw from a huge class of talented incoming freshmen.

DAWSON MUSTANGS

Coach: Katie Boyle (fifth year) and John Kilgour (fifth year).

Last year: Boys - Finished 14th at Class 2A state meet. Girls - Finished 7th at regionals.

Girls returning state qualifiers: None.

Other boys to watch: Griffin Bigger (Fr.); Ben Deitsch (Sr.).

Other girls to watch: Lucca Fulkerson (Fr.,); Nami Kaneko (Jr.); Sophie Weiner (Jr.).

Outlook: After graduating Maggie Berry, who placed 16th at state last season, the Dawson girls team will have a number of fresh faces trying to qualify for state for the first time. On the boys side, the Mustangs will be led by several young runners who got a taste of the state meet last season since the Mustangs qualified a team for the state championships.

ERIE TIGERS

Coach: Addie Bracy (second year).

Last year: Boys - Finished 5th at regionals. Girls - Finished 5th at regionals.

Boys returning state qualifiers: Jamison Cartwright (Jr., 54th).

Girls returning state qualifiers: Emily Condon (Jr., 55th).

Other boys to watch: Nathan Hutson (Sr.); Tyler Larson (Sr.).

Other girls to watch: Alia Brand (Sr.); Bekah Weigand (Jr.).

Outlook: The Tigers didn't qualify either team for the cross country state meet last season but after a strong track season in the spring, they are optimistic that their depth could give both sides a better chance in 2017. Cartwright and Condon provide state experience and the program should get a boost from Hutson, a senior transfer from Ohio who has solid experience.

FAIRVIEW KNIGHTS

Coach: Darren Bessett (second year).

Last year: Boys - Finished 11th at Class 5A state meet. Girls - Finished 11th at Class 5A state meet.

Boys returning state qualifiers: Lance Adams (Sr., 116th); Brock Granberg (Jr., 80th); Peter Kennedy (Sr., 92nd); Jonathan Wang (Sr., 138th).

Other boys to watch: None.

Other girls to watch: None.

Outlook: The Knights will continue to build their program after last season's success and with a stronger and faster team this year, especially on the girls side. Expect Bowland to be a particularly strong standout for Fairview, which will also feature a number of talented young runners who could surprise by the end of the fall.

FREDERICK WARRIORS

Coach: Michele Blanken (third year).

Last year: Boys - Finished 12th at regionals. Girls - Finished 11th at regionals.

Boys returning state qualifiers: None.

Girls returning state qualifiers: None.

Other boys to watch: Christopher Haley (So.); Riley McNeil (So.); Doyle Schroth (Sr.); Alex Workman (So.).

Other girls to watch: Casey Elnicki (Sr.)

Outlook: Both the Frederick girls and boys teams came in last place at regionals last season, largely because the teams have battled low numbers for several seasons. This year's Warriors will be a younger group yet again, and will focus on improving and becoming more competitive throughout the fall.

HOLY FAMILY TIGERS

Coach: Dave Good (23rd year).

Last year: Boys - Finished 11st at Class 3A state meet. Girls - Finished 9th at Class 3A state meet.

Other boys to watch: Dylan McIntosh (Fr.).

Other girls to watch: Alyssa Lucero (Fr.); Ashley Darrah (Jr.).

Outlook: Hopes are high across the Tigers' girls lineup as they return most of last year's state meet team and also are adding a handful of incoming freshmen who could contribute this season. The Holy Family boys team isn't quite as strong as the girls team but returns a solid base of state meet experience in its own right and expects to be just as competitive at regionals and state as it was in 2016.

JEFFERSON ACADEMY JAGUARS

Coach: Ben Hershelman (ninth year).

Last year: Boys - Finished 24th at Class 3A state meet. Girls - Finished 20th at Class 3A state meet.

Other boys to watch: None.

Other girls to watch: Elizabeth Munson (Sr.).

Outlook: The Jefferson Academy boys team lost a lot of talent to graduation last spring but will be led by top-10 finisher Ryan Lehmuth and a legion of sophomores who call themselves the "Phreshbros." On the girls team, the Jaguars return a ton of state meet experience and expect seniors Dobbs, Schlagel and Munson to lead the group back to state.

LEGACY LIGHTNING

Coach: DJ Hummel (sixth year).

Last year: Boys - Finished 10th at regionals. Girls - Finished 5th at regionals.

Girls returning state qualifiers: Brynn Siles (So., 7th).

Other boys to watch: Dylan Haines (Sr.); Parker Lee (So.); Ryan Montera (Fr.).

Other girls to watch: Bryce Baca (So.); Laura Broderick (Jr.); Abby Jones (So.).

Outlook: Sophomore Brynn Siles returns as the big gun for the Lightning after she placed seventh at the Class 5A state championships as just a freshman last season, and with her in the lead the team thinks it can break into the team scoring competition at state. On the boys side, Haines is the team's best shot at a state qualifier but Montera has youth on his side and could be capable of a breakout freshman campaign.

LONGMONT TROJANS

Coach: Scott Dickinson (first year).

Last year: Boys - Finished 11th at regionals. Girls - Finished 7th at regionals.

Boys returning state qualifiers: None.

Girls returning state qualifiers: Emily Billow (So., 102nd).

Other boys to watch: Finn Kilcullen (Jr.); Mason Hayes (Jr.); Jacob Lyon (Sr.).

Other girls to watch: Erika Chavez (Sr.); Debbie Chou (So.); Jayci Johnson (Sr.).

Outlook: Overall a young program with the bulk of its participants residing in the sophomore class, Longmont has set the goal of improving its standing at regionals and trying to qualify a team for state. With a number of athletes who appear capable of qualifying individually, the Trojans' goals could be within reach.

LYONS LIONS

Coach: Mark Roberts (22nd year).

Other boys to watch: Jordan Shackelford (So.); Simon Stone (So.).

Other girls to watch: Jewel Thomas (Jr.); Madeline Watts (Sr.).

Outlook: The Lyons boys return all their varsity members from last year's runner-up team and the girls just lost one (CeAnn Udovich), with a strong nucleus back as well. Both teams hope to improve one spot and move to the top of the podium at the state meet this year. The boys have eight varsity-caliber runners and will be one of the preseason favorites, while the girls are in the pack chasing defending champion Telluride.

MEAD MAVERICKS

Coach: Chris Reynolds (fifth season).

Last year: Boys - Finished 16th at Class 4A state meet. Girls - Finished 6th at regionals.

Boys returning state qualifiers: Hayden DeBuse (Sr., 47th); Isaac Dukes (Sr., 101st); Justin McDaniel (Sr., 70th); Jack Weis (Sr., 113th); Andrew Williams (Sr., 133rd).

Other boys to watch: Nick Scohy (So.).

Other girls to watch: Maeve DeBuse (Jr.); Eva Maeda (So.); Ryleigh Stephen (Jr.).

Outlook: With the level of talent Mead is returning on the boys side, the Mavericks boys are hoping to break into the top 10 at the Class 4A state meet in 2017. The girls have significant potential, as well, with senior Sophia Maeda returning as one of the early favorites to finish in the top 10 at state again.

MONARCH COYOTES

Last year: Boys - Won Class 5A state meet. Girls - Finished third at Class 5A state meet.

Other boys to watch: Avery Conaghan (So.); Paxton Hansburg (Jr.); Reed Henderson (Jr.); Logan Weber (So.)

Other girls to watch: Brooke Forsythe (Jr.); Ginger Harrington (So.); Julia Mainland (So.); Libby Moore (Sr.); Chloe Smith (Fr.).

Outlook: The Coyotes bring experience and depth on both their boys and girls team into the 2017 season, with the boys standing as the defending state champs. Graduating a runner like last year's individual champion Isaac Green won't make it easy to repeat but the Coyotes like their chances with Perry back as a senior. On the girls side, Hogan has had a great summer of training and Leader will look to improve on her 22nd-place finish from last season.

NEDERLAND PANTHERS

Coach: Kory Skattum (first year).

Outlook: Though small in number and young in years, the Nederland girls team returns a group of runners who have appeared at the Class 2A state meet already early on in their prep careers. The boys side of the program is even smaller, but has a plan to begin building under first-year head coach Kory Skattum.

Outlook: Returning their entire state roster from 2016 and with transfers Cruz Culpepper and Ares Reading gaining eligibility, the Niwot boys are poised for a much better season in 2017 than they had last fall. Despite losing some big-time contributors from last year's team, the Niwot girls still feel like they have a shot at the top 10 with Smith and James leading the way.

Outlook: Featuring several national-caliber runners, the Peak to Peak girls team returns an impressive group that continues to improve and should be even deeper and more consistent than last fall's state championship group. The Pumas boys team has set its sights higher this season and have improved as a cohesive unit from lineup spots one through seven.
