10 GIRLS TO KNOW

Elise Cranny, Jr., Niwot: Distance runners do not get much faster than the Cougars' second-place Class 4A finisher.

Claire Green, Jr., Monarch: Green was part of the Coyotes' motor to the top in 2011 and the fifth-place finisher should provide plenty of kick this year.

Isabelle Kennedy, Jr., Fairview: Kennedy has her work cut out in a challenging 5A field, but working to improve last year's ninth place should keep her at the front of the pack.

Erin Twaddell, Sr., Centaurus: The Warriors senior placed 19th a year ago and is one of the big reasons the Centaurus girls are again aiming for the top.

Melanie Nun, Sr., Legacy: Nun brought plenty to the table for Legacy in 2011, finishing 12th in 5A's fast-paced field.

Lindsey Chavez, Jr., Holy Family: The Tigers believe they are state contenders, and Chavez closing in on the 19-minute mark is a big reason why.

Miriam Roberts, Jr., Lyons: Lyons wants to roar to the top of 2A and Roberts' eighth-place finish from a year ago has her believing it's possible.

Morgan Lu, Jr., Mead: Lu has been the Mavericks' standard bearer and has the pace to improve her 15th-place finish of 2011.

Regan Vandepol, So., Broomfield: Vandepol was the surprise pack leader for the Eagles and comes back a wiser runner.

Kaitlyn Benner, Jr., Monarch: Benner and her 10th-place finish last year is another reason why the rest of 5A shutters at the mention of the Coyotes.

10 BOYS TO KNOW

Paul Roberts, Fr., Lyons: Roberts' BolderBoulder 10K victory for his age group last spring -- in 33 minutes, 39 seconds -- has already made him a contender for a 2A state title.

Rich Sanchez, here anchoring Fairview’s 3,200-meter relay at last spring’s state track meet, should be a key contributor for the Knights cross

Chandler Reid, Sr., Centaurus: Reid helped the Warriors to a 4A team title, now the senior aims to mow down individual honors.

Kyle Lund, Sr., Fairview: Lund finished 24th last year and is one of the reasons why the Knights are aiming for a title.

Bridger Tomlin, Sr., Fairview: Tomlin, who place 25th in 2011, is another reason why the Knights believe they are in line for a top finish.

Sean Ankarlo, Sr., Holy Family: Ankarlo is a long-time team leader for the Tigers and the 14th-place finisher has his eyes peeled for the top 10.

Marcel Such, Jr., Lyons: The Lions look to take the whole cake in 2A, and Such has the pace to help his team to the top of the podium.

Justin Rodenburg, Sr., Peak to Peak: Rosenburg placed 30th a year ago and should have the Pumas ready to roar.

Braden Richards, Jr., Skyline: Richards has the pace to improve on his 33rd place of 2011 in a challenging 4A field.

Matt Sarno, Sr., Broomfield: Sarno was key in the Eagles' run to second place at state last season and should be among the team's pack leaders.

Parker Sitton, Jr., Monarch: Monarch graduated a ton of talent, but the junior has the potential to make the team dangerous this year.

Other girls to watch: Alondra Perea (Jr.); Faith Rankin (So.)

BOULDER PANTHERS

Coach: Monique Guidry (17th year).

Last year: Boys -- Team did not qualify for Class 5A state. Girls -- Eighth at Class 5A state.

BROOMFIELD EAGLES

Coach: Greg Weich (third year).

Last year: Boys -- Second at Class 4A state. Girls -- Eighth at Class 4A state.

Boys returning state qualifiers: Matt Sarno (Sr., 39th); Ethan Gonzales (Jr., 47th); Cody Armstrong (Jr., 102nd).

Others boys to watch: Jake Mitchem (Fr.); Andrew Dewey (Sr.); Kevin Rhinesmith (Sr.); Paul Elliot (Sr.).

Other girls to watch: Kara Skattum (Fr.), Katie Croell (Sr.), Lexi Cox (Jr.).

Outlook: With Matt Sarno, Ethan Gonzales and Cody Armstrong back on the roster, Eagles coach Greg Weich believes the boys team is setting up for another top-10 run at state. The girls are the more veteran side of the team, with Regan Vandepol and Abby Gardner anchoring a nearly intact squad from Broomfield's top-10 finish from a year ago.

CENTAURUS WARRIORS

Coach: Devin Rourke (2nd year).

Last year: Boys -- Class 4A state champions. Girls -- Fifth at Class 4A state.

Boys returning state qualifiers: Chandler Reid (Sr., third); Jake Link (So., 43rd); Tyler Menger (Jr., 101st).

Other girls to watch: Dakota d'Orozzio (So.); Mariah Gallogly (Fr.); Sophie Bilello (Fr.); Olivia Rogers (Fr.).

Outlook: Graduation makes the boys title defense a challenge, but the Warriors have an edge with Chandler Reid as back pack leader. The girls want to leave their mark at state now and return nearly everyone from their fifth-place team from 2011.

ERIE TIGERS

Coach: Scott Leiding (11th year).

Last year: Boys -- Team did not qualify for Class 4A state. Girls -- 18th at Class 4A state.

Boys returning state qualifiers: None.

Girls returning state qaulifiers: Amelia Sease (Jr., 63rd); Chelsea Martus (Sr., 84th); Marissa Atkins (Jr., 138th); Kaitlyn Clark (Soph., 148th).

Others boys to watch: Cole Lewis (Sr.); Kyle True (Jr.); Dylan Larkin (Jr.).

Other girls to watch: Kyleen Newman (So.); Foley Armknecht (Sr.); Lauren Powell (So.).

Outlook: The Erie boys are a veteran squad and deep. The goal this season is to make a serious run to qualify for state. The girls team graduated their number one runner from 2011, but if it improves as a group, the team should have a good chance to qualify for state.

FAIRVIEW KNIGHTS

Coach: Josh Glaab (second year).

Last year: Boys -- Fourth at Class 5A state. Girls -- Ninth at Class 5A state.

Boys returning state qualifiers: Kyle Lund (Sr., 24th); Bridger Tomlin (Sr., 25th); Rich Sanchez (Jr., 43rd); Cory Munsch (Sr., 57th); Tim Brown (Sr., 88th).

Girls returning state qualifiers: Isabelle Kennedy (Jr., ninth); Kate Cuddington (Sr., 39th); Emily Barnes (Sr., 69th); Kendall Richarz (Jr., 85th); Jessica Piper (Soph., 121st).

Others boys to watch: Hal Shultz (Jr.); Scott Davids (Sr.).

Other girls to watch: Margot Clyne (Sr.).

Outlook: Fairview has significant depth, with the boys returning five runners from their run to fourth place as a team in the 2011 Class 5A state championships. The girls return six off their ninth-place team. Glaab's main goal for his team this year is to have the Knights running faster and tougher than last year, potentially putting the both the boys and girls in line for top finishes at the end of the year.

FREDERICK WARRIORS

Coach: Sue Sinclair (First year).

Last year: Boys -- Team did not qualify for Class 4A state. Girls -- Team did not qualify for Class 4A state.

Boys returning state qualifiers: None.

Girls returning state qualifiers: None.

Other boys to watch: Chris Erwin (Jr.); Mike Brown (Jr.); Patrick McCarron (Sr.); Zion Perez (Jr.).

Other girls to watch: Mackenzie Urban (Sr.); Emily Echelberger (Sr.); Grace Lahrs (Sr.).

Outlook: Sue Sinclair is in her first year with the Warriors, but has already seen success. The team's numbers have nearly doubled and the coach believes that could translate into big things for Frederick. Sinclair aims to build a cross country tradition at the school and sees no better way than breaking the team's state qualification drought. Presently she believes Chris Erwin and Mike Brown have the best shots on the boys side and Mackenzie Urban for the girls.

HOLY FAMILY TIGERS

Coach: Dave Good (18th year).

Last year: Boys -- Fourth at Class 3A state. Girls -- Ninth at Class 3A state.

Boys returning state qualifiers: Sean Ankarlo (Sr., 14th); Erich Hixson (Jr., 45th); Aaron Hillman (So., 53rd).

Girls returning state qualifiers: Lindsey Chavez (Jr., fifth); Danielle Medearis (Sr., 17th); Jessica Talamantes (So., 74th); Cassidy Hemp (So., 120th).

Other boys to watch: Dillon Roddy (Jr.); Tristan Smith (Jr.); Mark Bowles (Jr.); Joe Marcia (Jr.).

Other girls to watch: Katie Chavez (Frosh.); Olivia Bartelitti (Fr.); Victoria Montoya (Fr.); Shannon Langfield (Fr.).

Outlook: No two ways about it, the Tigers are setting up for a big year. Both the boys and girls have 3A championship ambitions and the runners to chase the trophies down. Lindsey Chavez enters the season eyeing a run at the girls championship, while Sean Ankarlo should provide the boys enough kick to improve on last year's fourth-place finish at state.

LEGACY LIGHTNING

Coach: D.J. Hummel (First year).

Last year: Boys -- Team did not qualify for Class 5A state. Girls -- 22nd at Class 5A state.

Boys returning state qualifiers: None.

Girls returning state qualifiers: Melanie Nun (Sr., 12th); Emma Gee (Soph., 21st); Anica Brewster (Jr., 166th), Devyn Palm-Trujillo (Jr., 148th).

Other boys to watch: Eddie Decrescenzo (Jr.); Chris Carroll (Jr.); Daniel Diaz (Jr.).

Outlook: The Lightning have a lot of youth but are in the position to grow in D.J. Hummel's first year as coach. Hummel has more to work with than just new talent. Melanie Nun and Emma Gee should keep the Legacy girls on track to improve on last year's 22nd-place team finish. The boys have a longer road to travel, with the team returning no state qualifiers.

LONGMONT TROJANS

Coach: Kevin Akers (first year).

Last year: Boys -- Team did not qualify for Class 4A state. Girls -- Team did not qualify for Class 4A state.

Other boys to watch: Nat Britten (Jr.); Max Morris (So.).

Other girls to watch: Ella Fallon (Sr.); Kathryn Schell (Jr.); Anna Schell (Jr.); Molly Klotz (Jr); Jamie Cropp (Jr.); Verena O'Malley (Fr.).

Outlook: The Trojans aim to start a cross country tradition this season, but are starting from scratch in many respects. Coach Kevin Akers, a former Lyons assistant, believes, however, that he has some runners that could turn heads by season's end.

LYONS LIONS

Coach: Mark Roberts (17th year).

Last year: Boys -- Second at Class 2A state. Girls -- Fourth at Class 2A state.

Boys returning state qualifiers: Marcel Such (Jr., sixth); Ryan Boucher (Sr., 44th).

Girls returning state qualifiers: Miriam Roberts (Jr., eighth); Olivia Raspotnik (Sr., 21st); Kelsey Miner (Sr., 34th); Jenna Anderson (Soph., 41st); Anna Sundrud (So., 35th).

Other boys to watch: Matt Dillon (So.); Brian Flynn (So.); Joel Such (Fr.); Paul Roberts (Fr.).

Other girls to watch: Faith Myers (So.).

Outlook: After finishing second at state the past four years, the Lyons boys aim to take a crack at winning their first 2A state title trophy. The girls' finishes have not been as high, but the talented team has similar goals, believing it can rake in a championship with five returning qualifiers.

MEAD MAVERICKS

Coach: Phil Hodgkinson (third year).

Last year: Boys -- Team did not qualify for Class 3A state. Girls -- Team did not qualify for Class 3A state.

Boys returning state qualifiers: None.

Girls returning state qualifiers: Morgan Lu (Jr., 15th).

Other boys to watch: Jake Grasinger (Jr.); Sean Esch (So.); Irvin Lazcano (Sr.).

Other girls to watch: Brianna Hallmark (Sr.); Acacia Stephen (Jr.); Tindra Norris (Fr.).

Outlook: The Mavericks make a jump to 4A competition this season. But jumping up in classification has done little to dim the team's expectations, especially for Morgan Lu. The team's lone returning state qualifier should be a pack leader.

MONARCH COYOTES

Coach: Kent Rieder (eighth year).

Last year: Boys -- Third at Class 5A state. Girls -- Class 5A state champions.

Boys returning state qualifiers: Parker Sitton (Jr., 59th); Chay Weaver (Jr., 76th).

Girls returning state qualifiers: Claire Green (Jr., fifth); Kaitlyn Benner (Jr., 10th); Ashley Litoff (Jr., 14th); Taylor Floming (Sr., 20th); Anna Hogan (Jr., 58th); Alyssa Reese (Jr., 79th); Karina Mann (so., 93rd).

Other boys to watch: Daniel McComas (Sr.); Shaofan Sun (Jr.); Matt Tubbs (Jr.); Tyger Roch (so.); Wyatt Reis (Sr.); Mehmed Erkocevic (Sr.); Kingston Wagner (Sr.).

Other girls to watch: Elissa Mann (So.); Virgina Spong (Sr.); Stephanie Tessier (Jr.).

Outlook: With its entire 5A state champion girls team back, Monarch expects nothing less than another run at the gold. The team is even eyeing a berth at the Nike National XC Championship and have the talent to get there with top runners Clair Green, Kaitlyn Benner, Ashley Litoff and Taylor Floming back. The boys lost their top three runners, but have six athletes that should have them back at top.

NEDERLAND PANTHERS

Coach: Kathy Butler (third year).

Last year: Boys -- Team did not qualify for Class 2A state. Girls -- Class 2A state champion.

Boys returning state qualifiers: None.

Girls returning state qualifiers: Bailey Kuechenmeister (Jr., 13th); Jenna Mahon (Jr., 15th).

Other boys to watch: Jake Aguiler (Jr.).

Other girls to watch: Mackenzie Radandt (So.).

Outlook: The defending Class 2A state girls champion has its work cut out for it this year, with graduations stealing away its potent one-two punch up front. But even with challenges ahead coach Kathy Butler believes Bailey Kuechenmeister and Jenna Mahon have enough kick to make the Panthers competitive.

NIWOT COUGARS

Coach: Sam Catterson (first year).

Last year: Boys -- 13th at Class 4A state. Girls -- Seventh at Class 4A state.

Boys returning state qualifiers: Jake Fisk (So., 90th).

Girls returning state qualifiers: Elise Cranny (Jr., second); Louise Vandenberghe (So., 80th); Rachel Sharpe (So.; 83rd); Madi Dolifka (Sr., 93rd).

Other boys to watch: Elijah Fisk (Sr.); Austin Schuler (Jr.); Tommy Plunkett (So.); Elliot Minor (So.); Will Krebs (So.); Niels Snow (So.).

Other girls to watch: Christa Boettiger (So.); Lauren Sharpe (So.); Libby Summers (Jr.); Meghan Tatusko (Jr.); Nicki Marshall (Fr.); Kela Fetters (Fr.).

Outlook: Class 4A state runner-up Elise Cranny aims to lead a talented Niwot girls team in its quest to improve on its seventh-place finish of a year ago. Cranny also has her sights set on an individual state championship if everything comes together. The boys have a tougher row to hoe after graduating six seniors from their 13th-place team of 2011. But first year coach Sam Catterson believes he has the underclassmen to reload his boys team.

PEAK TO PEAK PUMAS

Coach: Richard Hansen (third year).

Last year: Boys -- Seventh at Class 3A state championship. Girls -- 12th at Class 3A state championship.

Boys returning state qualifiers: Justin Rodenburg (Sr, 30th); Cameron Healy (Sr, 43rd); Riley Rodenburg (Sr, 51st); Stephen Rice (Sr, 61st); Liam Healy (Jr, 70th).

Girls returning state qualifiers: Dallas Frisbie (So, 21st); Mallory Oveson (Jr, 47th); Madelyne Clemans (So., 112th); Sam Chin (Sr., 113th).

Other boys to watch: Pieter Mundhenke (Sr.); Harnek Gulati (Sr.); Jhamal Fanning (Jr.); Alex Mowery (Fr.).

Other girls to watch: Emily Williams (Sr.), Megan Scoma (Sr.), Alice Oveson (Fr.), Yalda Nia (So.).

Outlook: The Peak to Peak girls aim to reload after losing two key runners from last year's seventh-place squad. The Pumas look to challenge once again for the regional crown and top five at state. The boys are shooting to improve on their 2011 state showing, one the team believed should have been better. With nearly everyone from its 2011 varsity roster returning, the team should have little problem finding the podium.

SHINING MOUNTAIN LIONS

Coach: John Hamilton (seventh year).

Last year: Boys -- Team did not qualify for Class 2A state. Girls -- Team did not qualify for Class 2A state.

Boys returning state qualifiers: None.

Girls returning state qualifiers: None.

Other boys to watch: Akira Youngblood (Sr.); Nicholas Hall (Sr.); Jordan Cherin (Fr.); Jonah Baca (So.).

Other girls to watch: Sabina Flandrick (Sr.); Paisley Sheehan (So.); Miranda Sein (Jr.).

Outlook: The Lions have a modest goal for the 2012 season. Coach John Hamilton would like to see his team improve week to week and put itself in the running for a top spot a regionals. If the team gets a few state qualifiers out of its effort, all the better. But the team has its challenges, the biggest being no returning state qualifiers to lead the pack.

SILVER CREEK RAPTORS

Coach: Barb Keith (12th year).

Last year: Boys -- Team did not qualify for Class 4A state. Girls -- Team did not qualify for Class 4A state.

Boys returning state qualifiers: None.

Girls returning state qualifiers: None.

Other boys to watch: Austin Gunnarson (Sr.); Hamilton Nelson (Sr.); Brian Hardy (Sr.); Alex Bush (Jr.); Connor Christoffersen (Jr.); Bronson Thomas (So.); Brenden Naftel (So.).

Other girls to watch: Gabi Koski (Sr.); Hannah Naftel (Sr.); Helena Scharf (Jr.); Ali Tripp (Jr.); Haylie Call (So.); Samantha Koski (So.).

Outlook: From Keith's standpoint, Silver Creek cross country appears strong. The team has a strong veteran core that Keith is certain will make the varsity competitive. And she is impressed with the participation numbers for the Raptors. Now it's a matter of the numbers translating into state qualifications.

SKYLINE FALCONS

Coach: Mary Monk (third year).

Last year: Boys -- Ninth at Class 4A state. Girls -- Did not qualify to Class 4A state.

Boys returning state qualifiers: Braden Richards (Sr., 33rd); Chris Meduna (Jr., 57th); Sam Berg (So., 70th); David Bocim (Sr., 156th); Samuel Obando (Jr., 175th); Travis Stuvel (Jr., 183rd).

Girls returning state qualifiers: Sydney Richards (So., 92nd).

Other boys to watch: Ryan Helgeland (Jr.); Jordan Wright (So.); Walter Nieuwlandt (So.).

Outlook: Coach Mary Monk is very excited about the Falcons, with the team's hard work in the summer bringing them into the season in fighting form. Skyline's top three boys runners -- Braden Richards, Chris Meduna and Sam Berg -- have a lock on their spots. But the rest of the runners will be fighting it out week to week, Monk said.
