NICKIE BLUE, Niwot softball -- Although the Cougars fell one win short of capturing the Class 4A state title, Niwot's all-everything pitcher still enjoyed a dominant state tournament. Blue tossed two shutouts, recording a one-hitter with 14 strikeouts in an opening-round win against Palmer Ridge before scattering six hits with nine strikeouts to lead the Cougars' semifinal win against defending 4A state champ Wheat Ridge. The South Carolina-bound Blue also notched 13 strikeouts in a quarterfinal-round win against Berthoud and enjoyed a stellar tournament at the plate, going 5 for 12 in the four games with a double and two RBI's.
GARRET ANGSTEAD, Skyline football -- The junior quarterback proved to be a one-man wrecking crew while leading the Falcons to a 33-28 win against Mead. Angstead completed 12 of 23 passes for 128 yards and was even more devastating on the ground, carrying the ball 22 times for 229 yards and three touchdowns. Angstead made amends for two interceptions he threw by grabbing one of his own late in the fourth quarter to thwart Mead's last-chance drive and preserve Skyline's victory.
