Locals in 5A championship matches

No. 2 singles: Austin Kattenhorn, Broomfield, vs. Kosta Garger, Regis Jesuit

No. 1 doubles: Beck Chrisbens/Brody Pinto, Fairview, vs. Emillio Gonzalez-Cruz/Evan Nuss, Regis Jesuit

No. 3 doubles: Ryan Grayson/Adam Heilbronner, Fairview, vs. Jack Abbey/Barry Dechtman, Denver East

DENVER — Fairview doubles players Adam Heilbronner and Ryan Grayson each reached the state semifinals, albeit at different ladder positions, during the Knights' Class 5A team championship run in 2017.

Neither Heilbronner, who played No. 4 doubles last fall, nor Grayson, who played No. 3, could find a way to break through into their respective championship matches. Now teamed together for the 2018 season, they managed to make it happen on Friday.

Unbeaten against 5A opponents this season and 3-0 so far at the state tournament, the Knights' No. 3 doubles pair defeated Cherry Creek's Ryan Flora and Braden Mayer, 6-3, 6-3 in the semifinals, to give themselves a shot at their division's championship match on Saturday.

"We have the momentum from last year and since we'd gotten that far, we thought we might as well keep going," Heilbronner said. "Ryan and I played a couple tournaments together over the summer so we got to know each others' games really well so we both had that feel and that drive to get to where we wanted to go. We've just been out there trying to hit our shots and not let up all through the season."

Having yet to drop a set and having beaten their first three state tournament opponents 36 games to 13, Heilbronner and Grayson appear to be at the top at the right time.

"We were working hard all season and that made us confident that we would be able to get there," Grayson said. "We've been able to set each other up well all tournament. They guys we're playing in the finals are obviously great players but we've already beaten them twice this season so we're feeling really confident."

Heilbronner and Grayson won't be the only Knights on the Gates Tennis Center courts for Saturday's finals. They'll be joined by No. 1 doubles pair Beck Chrisbens and Brody Pinto, who won 6-3, 6-4 over Cherry Creek's Devin Brownstein and Will Hoist in the semifinals.

At No. 2 doubles, the Knights' pair of Hall Humphrey and Reid Shaffer will play for third place on Saturday. After riding their singles lineup to a team championship last fall, the Knights won't have a singles player still in the mix on Saturday but are still sitting third in the team scoring competition.

Entering the final day as the sixth-place team, the Broomfield Eagles will have No. 2 singles player Austin Kattenhorn in the finals on Saturday. The Eagles junior won his semifinals match, 3-6, 6-3, 7-6 against Cherry Creek's Nick Svichar, and will play for an individual title despite this being his first career appearance at the state tournament.

Broomfield's No. 1 doubles duo of Jack Vanderberg and Charlie Vanderberg will play for third place.

The Boulder Panthers and Monarch Coyotes each advanced three of their seven ladder spots to the consolation semifinals but failed to get any players into third-place matches.

All finals and third-place matches will begin at 9 a.m. on Saturday.
