PUEBLO - It took three sets for Peak to Peak's Brett Finan to get to match point. Once he did, he decided he had enough.

It was time to advance.

He caught Colorado Academy's Richter Jordaan cheating a bit toward the middle so he blasted a serve to the far side of the court. It was good for an ace and a 6-1, 2-6, 6-4 semifinal win.

For the second year in a row, Finan will compete for a state championship in the Class 4A No. 1 singles bracket.

Last year, he lost to Kent Denver's Casey Ross. This year, the team is the same, but the opponent is different as Jack Moldenhauer will be the one representing the Sun Devils. In his second time going for the top spot on the podium, Finan will continue to look at what he learned in coming up short a year ago.

"Really, it's just staying focused every single point," he said. "Trying not to give up any free points and just staying focused and knowing you can win."

Peak to Peak has no shot to claim a team championship, so Finan will have just a single focus heading into Saturday.

He planned to use the rest of the day on Friday to unwind and start mentally preparing for his showdown with Moldenhauer.

"I've played him a couple of times before," Finan said. "He has a big forehand and big serve. I just need to play my game and I'll be alright."

Dawson had a shot to get representation in the finals, but senior Connor Larson fell to Colorado Academy's Jordan Wagner 7-6 (6), 6-4.

He did beat Dante Dino to advance to the consolation final match against Cheyenne Mountain's Christian Ridings.

The No. 2 doubles team of Phil Geraghty and Sam Troughton will also battle for third place after winning two playback matches Friday afternoon.

Heading into Saturday, they just want to make sure they end the season on a strong note and keep momentum moving forward for 2018.

"The team needs every point it can get," Geraghty said. "Every match counts and third place counts for a lot of points, even if it's not first or second. It's really important for the team effort here."

The Mustangs sit in fifth place overall with 19 points, right behind Niwot. The Cougars have Riley Black in the No. 2 singles consolation final and the team of Jongwon Lee and Peter Lee in the No. 4 doubles consolation final.

All championship and consolation final matches begin at 9 a.m. on Saturday.
