DENVER — Trailing Overland senior Draden Hoover in the Class 5A No. 2 singles state quarterfinals on Thursday, Fairview junior Ethan Schacht felt himself being separated from his momentum and his opponent suddenly wrenching it back over to the other side of the net.

It was an unpleasantly familiar feeling for Schacht, who had lost to Hoover at the Region 2 tournament just a week prior. But Thursday was a different day and Schacht had won the first set so he knew he needed to make on final push.

Overcoming a 4-2 deficit in the second set, Schacht rebounded to win the match 6-2, 6-4 and advance to the state semifinals.

"I felt like I played well throughout the whole day," Schacht said. "In the second match, I started struggling a little bit in the second set and figure out how to beat him. I didn't play my best against him at regionals but I was really excited to come back and have another chance to play him. Overall, I was just way more aggressive."

With Hoover playing through a shoulder injury, Schacht was frequently able to attack his opponent's underhand serve and come to the net with great success.

Having placed fourth at No 3 singles last season, Schacht arrived at Gates Tennis Center on Thursday as a veteran of the big stage. But he could not have predicted that his first-round opponent, Rocky Mountain's Johnny Titelbaum, would withdraw from the tournament because of illness and be replaced by Grand Junction's Cal Hegstrom at the last minute. After the last-minute switch, Schacht handled Hegstrom, 6-0, 6-2 in the first round.

"That didn't really affect me," Schacht said. "I just treated him like any other player and gave him my best. My goal is just to play good tennis. I always focus on winning but my coach also wants me to focus on the stuff that leads to winning like my attitude and my general game."

Schacht will play Denver East junior Charlie Franks, another opponent who has beaten him previously this season, in the semifinals on Friday morning. Schacht said he is eager for the rematch, which will begin at 9 a.m., and another opportunity for a better showing against a strong opponent.

As a team, the Fairview Knights advanced all seven of their ladder spots out of the first round but only Schacht and the team's four doubles pairs reached the championships semifinals. No. 1 singles player Tom Melville lost a regionals rematch in the quarters, a 6-3, 6-2, 7-6 match against Overland's Dawid Kijak that ended in a 7-1 tiebreak. Fairview's Graham Blanco fell in the No. 3 singles quarterfinals, 3-6, 6-2, 6-3 to Denver East's Bryce Viorst.

Also in the No. 3 singles quarterfinals, Monarch's Jack Ferry fell 6-1, 6-3 to Cherry Creek's Alex Gordon. Despite significant physical limitations resulting from preseason shoulder surgery, Ferry managed to win his first-round match, 7-6, 7-6 against Chatfield's Zac Meyer.

"We've got a lot of guys waiting to see if we get playbacks tomorrow," Monarch head coach Duke Paluch said. "We had a lot of close matches and played good tennis. But when you place second at regionals, you play the Fairviews and the Cherry Creeks in the first round and those are tough matches."

Andrew Episkipos and Chris Strobel were the only Broomfield players to win a match, teaming up to win 7-6, 6-2 in the first round of the No. 4 doubles bracket before losing the Fairview's Aaron Nguyen and Hall Humphrey in the quarterfinals.
