GREELEY -- Coming into Thursday's Class 4A Region 4 tennis tournament in Greeley, the entire Niwot squad held No. 1 seeds at their respective positions, ensuring each Cougar had a bye straight to the semi-finals.
The extra rest NHS earned did not bode well for the rest of the field, which stood no match against the top team throughout the remainder of the tournament.
Niwot won in straight sets in every single match they played, leaving no doubt that they are a force to be reckoned with come next week's state tournament. The Cougars won regional titles at all seven positions to advance the whole team to state and win the regional team title.
"Obviously, it's everyone's goal to win," head coach Miikka Keronen said. "All of our guys played well, and I'm evenly happy for all of them."
While the Cougars appear strong at each position, their three singles players appeared to be in particularly good form. The trio of Harrison Lang, Spencer Lang and Allen Fu dropped a combined seven games in their six matches on the day.
But Keronen isn't so quick to make any bold predictions for the state tournament just yet.
"Everyone goes in expecting to win it, but we are realistic," Keronen said. "A top four finish would be good, top two would be great and winning it all would be amazing."
