AIR FORCE ACADEMY — The Skyline boys soccer team took No. 1 seeded Air Academy to the brink of elimination in Saturday afternoon's quarterfinals of the Class 4A state tournament, but the host Kadets were able to turn up the fire in the late minutes of regulation and score early in overtime for a 3-2 win.

Hector Rubi scored for Skyline with about five minutes remaining in the second half to give the No. 8 seeded Falcons a 2-1 lead, but the Kadets' Aiden Schwenke managed to equalize the contest at 2-2 in the 78th minute with his second goal of the contest.

The Kadets (18-0) retained the momentum into extra play and didn't need it for long, scoring within the first few chances they had to move on to Wednesday's semifinals.

Skyline finished the season 14-2-2.

"The boys did amazing and all I can say is that we're proud of them," said Skyline head coach Luis Chavez. "It's just really too bad that we couldn't maintain the win those last few minutes of regular time.

"We represented great. We've played at a high level all year but in the playoffs, both mentally and physically you have to be able to take things to another level. That's what we focus on for the coming years."

After scoring a pair of 1-0 wins in the first two rounds of the playoffs, Saturday's third round for SHS was equally tough through the first 40 minutes and things were knotted at 0-0 at the half.

Cooper Welsh broke the stalemate with his second goal of the season, only to be followed by Schwenke's sixth marker of 2017 off a set piece.

The Kadets proved capable of answering anything the Falcons threw at them, but it was a ball from the Skyline midfield that was misplayed in the back of the field that led to Schwenke's second tying attempt.

"We made a mistake trying to come out of the back, and their player just got a good left-footed shot over to the far post, well-placed," Chavez said.
