The No. 7-seed Broomfield boys soccer team dominated Cherry Creek 4-1 to advance to the state quarterfinals in Class 5A. Junior Nathan Dishongh led the way for the Eagles with a goal and two assists, and senior Michael Mooney had two goals.

Despite the flattering scoreline, head coach Jim Davidson was not particularly pleased with his team's performance.

"I thought we had some individual moments that turned the game in the second half, but as a team, the way we connected and our decision-making were a bit off tonight," he said. "I thought there were four or five guys who just weren't real sharp tonight. We're definitely going to have to be better going forward."

Dishongh opened the scoring in the eighth minute, as he followed up a rebound from his own shot and knocked it home to give the Eagles the early 1-0 lead.

Broomfield would score three more times in the second half to put the game away. In the 43rd minute, Dishongh played Mooney through, who shook off a defender in the box and finished low at the far post for the 2-0 lead.

Mooney struck again 10 minutes later, as he fought off multiple defenders and the goalkeeper for a long ball and rolled it into the open net to put the Eagles ahead 3-0.

Senior Michael Georgiton finished the scoring for Broomfield, as Dishongh again played a perfect through ball that found Georgiton, who knocked it inside the far post.

Cherry Creek would get one back with a long-range effort from Ian Elliott in the 70th minute, but by that point the game was already out of reach.

"Defensively, we had pretty good shape. Once we realized how they were running out of the midfield, I thought we did better at picking up the marks. In the second half, we did a good job of keeping the play in front of us," said Davidson.

Heading into the quarterfinals, Davidson said his squad needs to all be on the same page with each other.

"In the quarterfinals, we all have to be good. We had six or seven guys who were good tonight, but not enough players who were great," he said.

The Eagles will face the Far Northeast Warriors, the No. 2 seed on Saturday.
