Fairview boys soccer advanced to the second round of the 5A playoffs with a 2-0 win over Lakewood Friday night. The 13th-seeded Knights played solid defense and scored once in each half to put away the 20th-seeded Tigers.
"I thought we played with a spirit and an energy and urgency that I hadn't seen for a little while," said Fairview head coach Jeff Frykholm. "We were able to sustain pressure better than we have in the past and overall it was a pretty complete performance. I was pretty pleased with the way the guys played today."
Sajji Singh would strike first for the Knights in the 28th minute. Wyatt Sales sent a long ball into the box and the Lakewood goalkeeper misjudged it, allowing Singh to get his head to it and knock it into the right side of the net for a 1-0 lead.
Lakewood would have their best chance in the 58th minute, as a Tiger found himself open at the top of the box, but he sent his shot wide.
Joshua Kim would put the game away for the Knights in the 72nd minute. Myles Ellis beat his defender and ran free into the left side of the box. Ellis crossed the ball to Kim, who tapped it into the open net for a 2-0 lead.
Defensively, Fairview held Lakewood to just five shots on goal, none of them difficult for Luc Albuisson to handle.
"We stayed compact. We really got exposed against Boulder, where we were a little too aggressive and left some big gaps in the back. We were tighter today and a little more patient. We moved and shifted well together and were really clean on the ball," Frykholm said.
In the second round, Fairview will get their third shot at crosstown rival Boulder, the No. 4 seed and defending state champions. Boulder won their previous two meetings this season, 2-1 at Fairview on August 31 and 4-0 at Boulder last Saturday.
"It's no secret that they've handled us pretty easily," said Frykholm. "They're dangerous, and it's at their field, which is tough. On the other hand, our guys are excited. That game is always unpredictable and you never know what's going to happen. The guys are certainly pleased to have the opportunity to play them again."
The game will be played at 6 p.m. on Nov. 1 at Recht Field.
