EVERGREEN — The Longmont soccer team picked a bad day to have their worst game of the season.
Notably confident after picking off the Durango Demons in the second round of the Class 4A state tournament on Tuesday via a shootout, the Trojans carried their midfield woes into Saturday's quarterfinals against Evergreen, and the Cougars were able to use that to overwhelm the holding line in a 6-1 win for the hosts.
Brock Anderson had a hat trick with a penalty kick goal included, and Steven Belrose also scored twice in the Cougars' win, which sends EHS to the semifinals against either Cheyenne Mountain or Ponderosa.
All five of those goals between the pair came in the first 33 minutes of play, a shocking development considering LHS had only allowed three goals in a game just once this season.
That's just how off Longmont was as it finished the season 15-2-1. Head coach Mike DiGiallonardo wasn't about to pin the entire season on this game, however.
"I've been coaching for 19 years, and there are a lot of kids that come into your life during that time, but this was a special group," DiGiallonardo said. "Evergreen was a very good team that possessed well, and we didn't bring our possession with us today. I don't know what changed through our midfield play, but when you keep winning you don't try to change things up a whole lot.
"We just didn't have it today."
Evergreen outshot Longmont 14-4 in the first half, with the Trojans finally getting on the scoreboard by way of a Alex Santucci score in the 38th minute. Two of the four shots they had came in that sequence.
The Cougars, victors in the first two rounds by 6-1 and 2-1 scores, took advantage of a 1-on-1 situation just 7 minutes into the game, at which time Brock Anderson softly headed a ball to settle in along the left wing while the defender on him lost his footing. Anderson planted the ball to the far post past Joel Chavez to make it 1-0.
In the 19th minute, Adriano Borsa was tripped in the scoring area to set up a penalty kick, and Belrose took the shot and scored.
Evergreen was off and running after that.
"Our defense, I don't know if we came out nervous or what happened, but our touches on the ball were bad and their forwards took advantage of that," senior defender Eric Alvurado said. "We just couldn't come back from the goals in the early part of the game."
The loss ended what was a fantastic season for the Trojans, a team that had not had a winning record since 2012. Included in the mark is a Northern League championship, something they can hang their hat on.
"Our season went better than we initially though we were going to have, and we gave it our all," Alvurado said. "Sadly, today, all the work that we put into the season just didn't come out on the field."
