LITTLETON - Sometimes brothers fight. But whether or not they're fighting, they're always competing with each other.
That's what Jack and Sam Hoover are doing at the Class 4A boys state golf tournament in Littleton this week.
"It's pretty fun," Jack said. "We don't get to play together much, but there's always a little rivalry."
As is tradition with siblings. Monday there was no clear-cut winner as both shot a 17-over-par 89.
Sam, a sophomore for the Cougars, claims that he never beats his older brother. That may have been the case on Monday, but only because Jack finished his round with a birdie while Sam came in with a bogey.
"I did not want to lose to him today," Jack said emphatically.
The younger Hoover isn't surprised since he had a quick answer when asked who the better golfer of the family is.
"Jack by a pretty good margin," he said.
The Hoovers are the only two qualifiers for Niwot. That means they're ineligible to make a run at a team title so competing against each other is the better alternative and just makes the event more fun.
"We're not too competitive with each other," Jack said. "We root for each other as much as ourselves. It's always fun."
For the first time in the state tournament, golfers from Mead were able to compete for their school. This is the first year of the program for the Mavericks. T.J. Shehee and Kellen Kudrna each shot a 78, putting them five strokes behind Rossevelt's Tyler Severin, Valor Christian's Jake Welch and Thompson Valley's Darren Edwards.
Shehee was at the state tournament a year ago, but with no golf team at Mead, he played for Silver Creek.
"Playing for Mead, I had a little more recognition this year," Shehee said. "It's kind of a different feeling, but in regard to just going out and playing in the tournament, it was pretty much the same."
