GRAND JUNCTION - Fairview golf coach Jay Capaul said if someone told him before the state golf tournament that only one of his four players would break 80, he would have thought it was a joke.

But other than senior Daniel Pearson's 2-over-par 73, no one on the Knights' golf team broke 80 on the first day of the Class 5A boys golf tournament at Bookcliff Country Club on Monday. Senior Andrew Perry scored 80, junior Will Branan carded an 81 and senior Miles Murphy shot an 84.

"Golf's a funny game and it's one day at a time," Capaul said. "You need to bring your A-game for a difficult course like this, and they didn't have it today and I don't really know why."

Even though Capaul said it was a little disappointing, he knows the guys will come out again tomorrow to play, and hopefully bounce back.

"These guys played at state last year (besides Miles Murphy), and they seemed a little tight today, and that surprised us having been at state last year." Capaul said. "This course has very difficult greens, very fast, very hard to putt. If you're a little tight, it's gong to be difficult, and their putts weren't dropping."

Pearson said he played "pretty awful."

"I didn't make any putts and didn't hit any approach shots to get myself short birdie putts," Pearson said. "It's definitely challenging around the greens, but we aren't down by that much."

Despite a disappointing day for the Knights, the players didn't hang their heads and battled all the way through to the end, which Capaul said he was proud of.

"They're all seniors and tomorrow is their last round of high school golf," Capaul said. "That's the challenge I'll give them tonight is to make that last round memorable and see how high we can climb up the board."

Monarch's Danny Gallant shot a 75 and Ethan Alexander ended the day with a 76. Boulder's Freddie Gluck shot a 6-over 77.
