BROOMFIELD — Though it didn't win him a state title, Boulder junior Freddie Gluck had the strongest finish of anyone on Day 2 of the 2015 Class 5A boys golf state championships.

Finishing in a tie for 45th at Fort Collins Country Club, Gluck showed he could have placed much higher when he turned in the lowest score of any player on the final nine holes of the tournament. Since then, Gluck has just kept rolling along and expects to be a contender this season.

"My expectations are definitely higher," Gluck said. "I'm just hoping to keep playing well and try to be a contender on the second day at state."

On Tuesday, Gluck carded a 1-over 73 at Broadlands Golf Course to finish in a tie for third at the Holy Family Bobblehead Invitational. Gluck, who is coming off a successful summer playing in American Junior Golf Association events, didn't have a birdie on the front nine but birdied Nos. 10, 11, 15 and 17 to finish strong on the back nine.

"I started off with a bogey and I wasn't thrilled with that and shooting 3-over on the front nine," Gluck said. "But I chipped in for birdie on 10 and hit a nine iron within four feet and made birdie there. I played pretty well except for two doubles that really got me."

It was a good day all around for the Boulder Panthers, who finished seventh in the team scoring. Broomfield placed third, Legacy was fifth, and Monarch and Dawson School tied for 10th.

"We played Highland Hills yesterday and that course is tough for everybody," Panthers head coach Rick Uhlir said. "I think they're calming down a little bit. Henry Howser shoots 83 today and that's his best score ever. And Freddie, he's getting so solid and the expectations are there and he just keeps playing great."

Dawson's Billy Howenstein won the tournament with five birdies and a 3-under 69 on the card.

"I was with him all day and he was outstanding," Dawson head coach Arnold Lewis said. "He showed a lot of grit and his ability to overcome challenges and have the discipline to save par all day long. He understands that he's going to have a lot of things not go well for him but that he can hang in there. I have all kinds of hopes and dreams for Billy and for him, it's about keeping the right mindset to be successful."

Broomfield's Shane Tilger and Legacy's Grant Hoos tied with Gluck for third. Monarch's Robbie Redfern and Broomfield's Adam Tilger tied for 10th with matching 77's.
