Spring breaks are in the books and local teams are back in action this week. Many will be opening up conference play and all will be entering the meat of their schedules. Here is a look at a few of the top events in BoCoPreps.com action this week.
Bear Creek at Legacy, Tuesday, 4 p.m.
Fresh off a spring break trip in Florida, during which senior Ryan Overboe threw a perfect game, the Lightning are back in Colorado to continue the in-state portion of their season. The Lightning will get a solid test from Bear Creek (4-1-1) before kicking off its Front Range schedule against Fairview on Thursday.
Longmont at Silver Creek, Thursday, 4 p.m.
With Longmont sitting at No. 9 in the CHSAANow.com and Silver Creek having just fallen outside the top 10, this city of Longmont rivalry has some shine on it as usual. Junior Rex Olinger is batting .500 with two homers and 15 RBIs for Silver Creek, while Noah Befus sports a 3.89 ERA and a .348 batting average for Longmont.
Fountain Valley at Jefferson Academy, Friday, 6 p.m.
Head coach Cory Hughes and the Jefferson Academy boys have been on a roll this season and even received some votes in the latest CHSAANow.com rankings poll. The Jaguars (4-1, 0-1 Pikes Peak) will look to for their fifth-straight win and first conference victory in this one.
Boulder at Monarch, Tuesday, 4 p.m.
This healthy cross-town dual features last year's 5A 500 freestyle champion in the form of Boulder's Quinton Pierce and a Monarch senior with multi-event medal potential in Kyle Mak.
Front Range League Invite No. 1, Tuesday, 8:30 a.m.
Set to take place at Flatirons Golf Course, the first Front Range League competition of the season will mark the beginning of several interesting conference storylines. Class 5A title contender Kelsey Webster will make her league debut, as will Broomfield's sophomore transfer Megan Vogt, who will play in her first FRL match since coming over from Holy Family in the offseason.
Northern League Match, Tuesday, Noon
Many of the local teams in the Northern League this season are young and will be looking for new faces to take the next step forward. Also keep an eye on Frederick senior Erin Baum, who placed 34th in 4A last season.
Legacy at Fairview, Tuesday, 7 p.m.
Both Legacy (6-0) and Fairview (3-1) are ranked the CHSAANow.com top 10 and are looking like early contenders in the always vaunted Front Range League. Gracie Armstrong leads Legacy with six goals, while Aspen Anderson leads Fairview with five.
Jefferson Academy at Peak to Peak, Tuesday, 6 p.m.
A rematch of last season's Class 3A state semifinals, this local matchup will be a big one in the league. These two clubs have just one loss and one tie between them and have allowed just four combined goals through nine games.
Mead at Frederick, Wednesday, 6 p.m.
These local teams both made it through the early portions of their respective schedules with winning records and are ready to kick of Tri-Valley League play against one another. Junior Shelby Smotzer leads Frederick with an impressive nine goals Anna Maher has led the Mavericks since scoring four goals in the season opener.
Centaurus at Conifer, Friday, 6 p.m.
The Centaurus Warriors took their first loss of the season in their last game, 12-11 to Cheyenne Mountain and will be looking to get back on track after winning their first four games. They'll be facing an undefeated team in the Conifer Lobos (3-0) as they attempt to start a new win streak.
Centaurus Tournament, Friday-Saturday, 8 a.m.
Boulder, Centaurus, Peak to Peak, Prospect Ridge and other local clubs will be going head-to-head here. Bracket play will begin on Friday and finals will be played on Saturday.
Track and field
Mullen Invite, Saturday, 8 a.m.
Always a fast and exciting meet, this big-time invitational will feature plenty of state meet preview matchups and could also host some state-leading performances. Lots of local teams will be in the mix, including Boulder, Broomfield, Centaurus, Fairview, Holy Family, Longmont, Mead, Monarch and Peak to Peak.
