LYONS -- The Silver Creek football team owned the top spot in the state's 3A RPI rankings going into Friday night's game, but the Raptors often didn't play the part on the field against Roosevelt.
They fumbled the opening kickoff, opening the door for a 33-yard Roosevelt touchdown by Angelo Hurtado just 50 seconds into the game. Then after a missed Silver Creek field goal, the Roughriders drove 80 yards and converted on a fourth-and-4 at the SCHS 19-yard line, leading to another Roosevelt TD.
The Raptors also threw an interception deep in Roughrider territory late in the first half and had a long reception for a near-touchdown negated by a penalty in the third period.
Still, Silver Creek led with three seconds left in the contest. But Roosevelt didn't allow the Raptors' mistakes to go unpunished as the Roughriders emerged with a thrilling 29-27 victory at Lyons High School.
"This isn't coach speak, but as a coach I did a terrible job," Silver Creek's Mike Apodaca said. "Discipline is on the coach, and we were completely undisciplined tonight. We had too many penalties, three or four fumbles. And you give a team that many chances ..."
It marked just Silver Creek's second loss since returning to Class 3A at the beginning of the 2016 season. Now 3-1 this year, the Raptors are now 15-2 since the start of the '16 campaign. Roosevelt also emerged from the contest with a 3-1 record.
The game featured five touchdowns scored in the fourth quarter alone -- and four lead changes.
Silver Creek took its first lead of the game with 7:18 left in the fourth quarter when junior Spencer Rich picked off a Trent Beall pass inside the Roosevelt 20-yard line and took it into the end zone for a pick-6 that made the score 20-16.
But the Roughriders responded quickly, scoring a TD of their own less than two minutes later on a 72-yard spinning run by Devynn Sanchez with 5:38 left.
After a good kick return by Brandon Harper, Silver Creek drove 52 yards in just over a minute to go ahead 27-23 with 4:21 remaining. QB Collin Black hit Patrick Miller for a 31-yard TD strike.
But Roosevelt wasn't done. The Roughriders moved 69 yards down the field, with Noah Craig bulling up the middle for the final 3 yards as time ran out for the winning touchdown.
"I feel like we just stepped on ourselves," said Silver Creek junior defensive back Christian Adams. "I feel like this was good for us that we lost because we're going to come back even stronger in the next games."
The Raptors certainly didn't fall because of an inability to move the ball. They finished with 371 yards of total offense, with Black throwing for 297 yards and two touchdowns and one interception.
TJ Blazon caught 10 passes for 158 yards, and Joe Roth-Bogrett finishing with seven receptions for 77 yards.
"It wasn't necessarily a talent thing or a bigger, faster, stronger thing," Apodaca said. "It wasn't a who's got better plays thing. That game was lost on discipline. The fingers point to the head coach there."
Next up, Silver Creek travels to Erie for a game next Friday at 7 p.m.
