I talked a little bit with Boulder boys basketball coach Jack Clarke on Sunday night, just after the postseason hoops brackets were released expecting to hear some disdaining remarks about the Panthers getting a No. 4 regional seed despite winning the Front Range League.

In fact, Clarke was very forthcoming about BHS getting what it deserved. A late loss to Arvada West, he said, was likely the key component in drawing that No. 4 position.

After last night's first round action — and it comes as no shock — Boulder learned it will be playing Far Northeast Warriors, formerly Montbello, on Saturday at BHS.

The Warriors smoked Bear Creek 64-46 to set up a 4-5 matchup that might be the toughest second rounder in the bracket. While Boulder has some great wins over the likes of George Washington and Aurora Central, FNE has victories against A-Central, 4A Longmont (the Trojans' only loss this year), Lincoln and Denver East.

"We were fortunate to have been able to schedule a lot of athletic teams in non-conference play, and we've played some great city teams already," Clarke said on Sunday. "We're excited to get to play them.

"The key for us is shooting well, but everything revolves around defense for us, getting defensive stops and taking care of the ball. The other stuff kind of comes for us when those things happen."

Oh yeah ... should Boulder get past the Warriors, it would set up a game with Overland and De'Ron Davis, the state's top recruited player this year.

Fairview girls have a favorable matctchup

While the Boulder boys may have a super tough go on Saturday, I think the Fairview girls have a great shot at beating host Brighton in another 4-5 matchup that's on Friday.

Yes, Brighton won its league and has won six straight games. But to say they have a lot of quality wins would be, um, a bit of a half-glass-full mentality. Brighton lost to 4A Centaurus by 26, 4A Longmont by 22, 4A Windsor by 3, and Boulder by 5.

And I'm not even factoring in a 68-31 win over Brighton for Fairview to open last year's playoffs. I could, however, see a similar type score this time around.
