The Windsor football team has good reason for having an ax to grind against Longmont, given the past two meetings between the teams.

When the two northern Colorado powers battle in the Class 4A semifinals on Saturday at Everly-Montgomery Field, however, the stakes could not be much higher.

A trip to Sports Authority Field at Mile High Stadium and a berth in the 4A championship game is on the line — a scene the Trojans have experienced in the past but one that the Wizards are hoping to gain for the first time.

Saturday's 1 p.m. kickoff should bring with it an incredible high school football experience, with the two regional schools sharing the Interstate 25 corridor north of Denver.

On the field, neither team can truly claim having more momentum than the other. Since their last meeting on Oct. 15, both teams have won five straight including two playoff contests.

But recent play matters little for the teams, considering what the past two games in the series have entailed.

In Longmont a little more than five weeks ago, the host Trojans scored their only points of the game with six seconds left in regulation, and then made a two-point conversion to walk away with an 8-7 victory. In the only meeting of the 2014 slate, the Trojans pulled off an even more unlikely road win in the same fashion, rallying from 21 points down to snare a 32-31 victory — again scoring late in the fourth quarter and going for two to oust the Wizards.

Longmont went on to appear at Sports Authority Field against Pine Creek in the 2014 4A title game, a destination it would love to make plans for once again. For Windsor, the 2011 Class 3A champions, getting a measure of revenge against the Trojans would be the ultimate way to gain its first chance to play at Denver's biggest football venue.
