AURORA -- Typically, Skylar McWee doesn't even attempt to disguise the approach he brings to the mats every time he competes.

The senior from Legacy wants to begin each bout as the aggressor, and McWee makes a point of retaining that aggression regardless of how the opening moments play out. It's an approach that once again served McWee well on Saturday, as he dominated the 220-pound final at the Class 5A Region 1 tournament to collect his second consecutive regional title.

McWee was the only one of Legacy's three finalists to claim a first-place medal in what proved to be a solid all-around day for the Lightning. Legacy advanced four athletes to next week's state tournament at the Pepsi Center while finishing third in the team standings.

Facing junior Dexter Bess from tournament host Smoky Hill in the final, McWee jumped to a 5-0 lead in the first minute of the bout and never looked back, ultimately recording a 13-4 victory.

"I had never wrestled (Bess) before, but I was watching him and, like a lot of the guys I wrestle, he likes to shoot," said McWee, whose three victories in the regional tournament improved his season record to 29-3. "I knew he was going to come out and shoot on me, so I think my first four points were just me scrolling and getting around. I have an aggressive style. It's just aggressive, aggressive, aggressive. I have to break him before I get broken."

Supporting McWee were runner-up finishes by 160-pound senior Connor Casady and 106-pound freshman Ryan Deakin.

Deakin and Casady suffered through similar setbacks during their championship bouts, finding few opportunities against opponents who executed strong defensive schemes. Deakin, who recorded pins in each of his first three matches while improving to 36-9, dropped a 2-0 decision against Fabian Gutierrez from Adams City.

Casady endured an even more frustrating championship match, suffering a 1-0 loss against Pomona's Archie Colgan. Colgan and Casady entered the tournament as the first and second-ranked 160-pounders in 5A, respectively, in this week's On the Mat rankings.

Despite the narrow setback, Casady qualified for state for the second consecutive year, and after getting waylaid by illness during the week of state last year, he is more than ready to end his prep career on a high note.

"That's a match I wish I would've won, but it tells me that with the toughest competition, I'm right up there with them," Casady said. "This week I just have to tune up on a few things and see where I go at state."

The Lightning's final representative at state will be senior Donovan Cogil, who placed fourth at 113 pounds. Legacy also received fifth-place finishes from 132-pound junior Adam Otterson, 138-pound senior Brian Mooney, and junior heavyweight Logan Lyons.

Although all three of those wrestlers were denied opportunities to earn state berths through wrestle-back bouts, those victories helped the Lightning accumulate 126.5 points, trailing only top-ranked Pomona (243) and Ponderosa (214.5).

"I'd have liked to get another two, three, four kids downtown, but the four we have going I think are legit contenders to place at state," Legacy coach Mike Thompson said. "There are a couple who could be state finalists. Obviously you always want a couple more, but the four that are going down there I think will be contenders. And if they contend at state, we're still going to do really well."
