FORT COLLINS -- Once Monarch senior Amanda Sanders touched the wall in her final high school race, she faced a conundrum typical of elite swimmers.

On the one hand, Sanders finished her signature event, the 100 breaststroke, at the Class 5A state meet with an improved time over the mark she put together during the preliminary heats. That's the sort of performance every swimmer strives for.

However, after entering the race as the event's top seed, Sanders was forced to watch Loveland sophomore Brooke Hansen surge down the stretch, dashing Sanders' state title dreams. Sanders still finished second in the race, posting a time of 1 minute, 5.72 seconds. Hansen touched the wall with a mark of 1:03.35.

"I'm generally happy, because it wasn't too far off my best time," Sanders said. "But I was genuinely shocked. I could see Brooke coming and I was like, 'Where is she coming from?' Then it was a race for second. You try to catch them, but she just kept going.

"It definitely was a good season. It was nice to race with these girls one final time on my team, and show that all the hard work that we put in has paid off. It was a good note to end on."

Sanders, who said she is leaning toward continuing her career at Duke, also finished sixth in the individual medley. It was marked improvement for Sanders over her state performance last year as a junior, when she placed fourth in the breaststroke and ninth in the IM.

Sanders also participated in two relay teams that reached Saturday's consolation finals, swimming the second leg of the Coyotes' 12th-place team in the medley relay and anchoring the club's 10th-place finish in the 200 freestyle relay. Monarch, which finished 13th in the team standings with 63 points, also received a ninth-place effort from sophomore diver Grace Newell.

"Amanda really stepped up for us on the relays," Monarch coach Ted Romero said. "Brooke Hansen was just on today. She really turned it on and Amanda did a great job staying with her and fighting for it. This year she not only performed in the pool, but she performed outside the pool for us leading a lot of underclassmen."

RICHEY UNDAUNTED

Yes, Boulder junior Amanda Richey pretty much had her state title hopes dashed when the state meet psych sheets were released and it was revealed she would have to face Regis Jesuit Olympian Missy Franklin in Richey's best event, the 500 freestyle.

Disappointing? Absolutely. Yet the Panthers' junior made the most of the race for second-place, capturing that No. 2 honor by posting a personal-best, All-American time of 4:54.98.

"At first I was a little, 'Oh, yea, she's going to kick my butt.' But I love Missy and I love racing her," Richey said. "I'm so happy for her and her accomplishments I figured it was just going to be her in her race and me in my race.

"It did push me. It pushed me a lot. I knew if she was lapping me that probably wasn't going to be good. I knew I was going to be behind her, but it pushed me to get a personal-best and try my best."

Richey also finished sixth in the 200 freestyle while combining with sophomore Haley Rowley to lead Boulder to an 11th-place finish in the team standings with 85 points. Rowley placed third in the individual medley and seventh in the backstroke. The duo also helped lead the Panthers to a victory in the consolation heat (ninth overall) in the 400 freestyle relay.

FRANKLIN'S FINALE

As usual, Franklin was all smiles even while she was decimating the opposition in her final prep appearance.

Franklin recorded individual victories in the IM and the 500 freestyle, setting Colorado records in both events. Not only does Franklin end her career with eight individual state titles, but she owns the state record in six of the eight individual swim events, in addition to being a part of one record-setting relay team (set in 2012).

LOMBARDI LEADS LEGACY

Overall, it was a disappointing state final for Legacy. Yet one bright spot was the performance of sophomore Mary Lombardi.

Lombardi was the only entrant the Lightning advanced into Saturday's finals, reaching the consolation heat of the 500 freestyle. Lombardi finished fifth in the consolation heat and 13th overall, posting a time of 5:15.28.

Lombardi almost advanced to the finals in the 200 freestyle but finished 18th during the preliminaries on Friday. Unfortunately for the Lightning, that wasn't the club's only near-miss. Legacy placed 17th during the preliminaries of the 400 freestyle relay, falling short of the consolation heat by 1.08 seconds.

"We were very excited for Mary," Legacy coach Diana Wiles said. "We had huge improvements through our league championship, and then (Friday) they were swimming flat. We were disappointed in some of our veterans. I'm not sure what was going on. I'm kind of at a loss."
