FORT COLLINS -- With two decorated seniors expected to lead a Fairview girls swim team riddled with talented sophomores and freshmen, the Knights harbored high expectations at the outset of the 2012-13 campaign.

Yet as the season wore on, and some of the Knights' best swimmers wore down, it seemed as if some of those expectations were destined to go down the drain.

Sophomore Julia Box battled a recurring knee issue all season. And senior Abbie Houck, a former state title winner, had reason to fret she wouldn't be able to compete in her final state meet at all due to a shoulder injury that kept her out of the pool competitively for the past month.

So, naturally, the Knights went out and put together one of the best state final performances in the program's rich history.

Houck, Box, and senior Lacey Smith led a superb effort for Fairview, which finished third in the team race at the Class 5A finals Saturday at the Edora Pool and Ice Center. The Knights compiled 181 points, trailing only Regis Jesuit (287 points) and Fossil Ridge (243). Saturday's effort also marked just the third time in 39 seasons that the Knights finished ahead of perennial power Cherry Creek.

"It just shows our depth that with two of our best swimmers not at the ability that they really are, we don't have to rely on just two people," Smith said. "We can go to other people and it's not a big deal."

Smith posted two of the five individual top-eight finishes recorded by the Knights, placing fourth in the 100 freestyle and eighth in the 200 freestyle. Smith's time of 51.79 was the second-best mark in the 100 freestyle in Fairview history, trailing only the 51.34 posted by Madeline Rovira in 2005.

Houck, despite competing with a tear in her left rotator cuff that still is healing, managed to finish seventh in the 100 freestyle. Both Houck and Smith, along with sophomore Jessie Li and freshman Logan Tidstrom, were part of one of the Knights' most impressive swims of the day in the 200 freestyle relay.

The group finished second in that race behind Regis Jesuit. Fairview actually was neck-and-neck with Regis until the Raiders unleashed five-time Olympic medalist Missy Franklin on the anchor leg.

"We're ecstatic," Fairview coach Bob Smartt said. "It was our team goal to get third in this meet at the beginning of the year. We had a lot of great performances today. The relays, Julia Box, Lacey Smith. Last year we had four girls make finals individually. This year it was nine. Julia had a quantum leap in her butterfly."

Box turned in a career performance in the butterfly, placing fourth with a time of 56.57 seconds. That mark shaved 1.49 seconds off her preliminary time, and it also was the second-best mark in school history, trailing only Kristen Lahey's time of 56.05 set in 2005.

Fairview turned in a number of strong performances in the consolation heats and also received a seventh-place finish from freshman Adee Weller in the 500 freestyle. Fairview opened the meet by placing fifth in the medley relay and repeated that finish in the 400 freestyle relay.

"Whenever you have these swims that kind of come out of nowhere, I can kind of feel it," said Box, who had never before posted a 100 butterfly time under 58 seconds. "That last 25 (yards) I was hurting so badly. It's all been worth it. With the knees, getting through that has made me so much tougher, and the results of this made it all worth it."
